What to Expect

The Drive Systems team is looking for a Sr. or Staff product expert for long term ownership of the Tesla Semi Drive Axle. This role will own and maintain the assembly definitions including CAD, drawings, and all relevant product and manufacturing specifications, and will also oversee long-term change management and improvement efforts of the drive axle product.

Tesla is currently ramping high-volume production of the Semi Truck at Gigafactory Nevada, a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of the transition to electric commercial vehicles. The Semi requires an uncompromising standard for design reliability and efficiency and includes cutting edge innovations across the powertrain. The product engineer is a multidisciplined and fundamentals driven role that will bring deep and wide systems thinking including working knowledge of high-volume automation, structural casting, geartrain design, and motors or mechatronic systems to successfully own and improve the highly integrated axle. The product engineer will rely on an extensive background in integration and program development to own the design, change management process, and direct coordination of improvement efforts across a large set of stakeholders.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the Semi Drive Axle assemblies including CAD, 2D drawings, and technical specifications and manage component and axle level integration.
  • Drive design maturity and high-volume requirements through production launch and ramp, and manage ongoing improvement efforts across the product.
  • Own change management, version tracking, and detailed requirements and release checklists.
  • Work in depth with component and system owners to generate engineering outputs and drive rigorous requirement documentation and launch diligence.
  • Own communication across the design, manufacturing, operations, and reliability teams.
  • Drive adoption of new systems, features, and best practices by engineering teams to improve productivity and provide ongoing support as a central authority on these items.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience with development of complex mechanical products.
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience with Computer Aided Design including part, assembly, and drawing development and product lifecycle management.
  • Extensive background in high precision mechanical product design, industrial powertrain design, or similar field.
  • Proactive, highly organized, and detail oriented, with strong technical communication ability to drive product and process improvements with a large interdisciplinary engineering team.
