UW Medical Center - Montlake has an outstanding opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Educator to join our Emergency Department team. The Emergency Department Educator role includes the functions of an educator, facilitator, leader, consultant and researcher in the area of emergency medicine. This position participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of ED patient care, orientation, required and continuing staff education, and new to specialty and nurse residency programs. The ED Educator will anticipate and forecast educational needs and trends and will design and implement evaluation plans for educational programs and projects to meet department goals. This role will also assist ED leadership in the creation and monitoring of individual improvement plans related to skill building and educational needs of ED staff.
This role will focus on Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement for the Emergency Department, systematically and formally reviewing concerning ED visits/events and concerning cases. This will entail collection, presentation and management of QA data and QI/PI projects.

ED Educator: 72%
Performance improvement and quality assurance: monitors clinical processes, outcomes, and system issues related to the quality of care provided; develops quality filters, audits, and case reviews; identifies trends and sentinel events; and helps outline remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality
Plans and implements clinical protocols and practice management guidelines with the guidance of Emergency Department Leadership and Medical UWMC Medical Director
Assessment, Program Development, Presentation, and Evaluation: Identifies staff training and development needs on an ongoing basis and based upon identified learning needs. Plans, develops, organizes, teaches, and evaluates education programs. Applies the principles of adult learning in all educational offerings.
Skill Verification and Competencies: Assists management in the development and maintenance of skill assessment and competency documentation tools. Coordinates skill verification programs.
Staff Development: As assigned, may assist Manager and Director in identifying skill development plans for individual employees and in providing individual training to help the person(s) improve.
Mentoring: Mentors and assists new employees to assimilate successfully into the workforce.
Orientation: Develops/conducts and updates employee orientation programs within the Emergency Department.
In-Service and Continuing Education: Designs, coordinates, implements and evaluates a variety of formal continuing education programs for the Emergency Department personnel based on identified learning needs, emerging trends in health care, new processes and best practices.
Formal Programs: As assigned, designs and oversees formal programs (examples include but are not limited to: Preceptor Program, Basic Life Support (BLS) Program, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Programs (ACLS), CPI, and ED residency.
Corporate Programs: If requested, designs, coordinates, implements and evaluates selected education programs offered throughout the hospital (examples include but are not limited to: Hospital-wide training programs on topics such as Patients are First, Performance Improvement, new software systems, disaster, safety, accreditation, etc.)
Educational Consultations, Committees, and Collaboration: Serves as in-house training expert and liaison representing Emergency Services. Provides consultation and assistance in educational program planning, teaching methodology, and program evaluation throughout the hospital, as needed, including patient education programs. Serves as a member of committees, work groups, and multidisciplinary teams as appropriate.
Projects: Assists in planning, presenting, and evaluating staff education programs as related to Emergency Services projects.
Management: Advises in the acquisition and maintenance of learning resources as applicable.
Clinical Practice/Coordination: 8%
As assigned, the Emergency Services Educator may assume a leadership role in clinical activities such as development of practice standards, research, providing interdisciplinary consultations, participating in performance improvement initiatives.
Assists in the provision of direct patient care to maintain skillset and promote staff education and direction; meets expectations outlined in RN job description and competency checklist.
When feasible this positon will include one shift on the floor per month.

Bachelors in Nursing and a minimum of four years clinical RN experience in a hospital setting required.
Minimum of at least two years clinical Emergency Department RN experience in a hospital setting required.
Two years’ experience in education/teaching required, including experience developing, implementing, presenting, and evaluating educational programs, either in an educational setting or in a hospital.
This job requires knowledge of adult teaching and learning principles and skills in program development, coordination, presentation in a variety of modalities, and evaluation and assessment.
Requires computer skills, including Microsoft WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.
Washington State RN license required by start date.
Master’s Degree in Nursing Preferred
