Insights into your Role:

The Cloud Platform organization is responsible for Core Virtualization products such as vSphere, Workstation, Fusion, and other Solutions for Enterprise Virtualization. The VMKernel Core team is part of the Cloud Platform organization and is responsible for the design, implementation, and architectural direction of the VMKernel – the operating system kernel for VMware’s ESXi operating system. As the operating system kernel responsible for running countless customer virtual machines, the VMKernel was written from scratch at VMware to provide the highest levels of efficiency and stability. The VMKernel Core team works across ESXi but its focus is the core kernel subsystems providing key functionality used by other groups within VMware as well as partner companies.

Responsibilities:

We are seeking Intern Software Engineers who are interested in operating systems and systems software. As a member of the VMKernel Core team, you will design and implement novel operating system techniques and algorithms for ESXi. You will work with various kernel teams to design and deliver new functionality to ensure ESXi and the VMKernel provide the most stable and featureful environment to run customer virtualization workloads. Our work will challenge your systems software development and problem solving skills.

Intern Performance Objectives:

  • Design and develop novel operating system techniques and algorithms for the VMKernel – VMware’s ESXi operating system kernel
  • Investigate and solve problems found in operating system kernel subsystems
  • Analyze and improve operating system functionality to provide new features and enhanced operation
  • Build skills in collaborating on large projects with engineers across multiple groups

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing MS or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineer, or equivalent, or a BS with an operating systems background.
  • Experience with low-level / kernel-level code development.
  • Strong C programming skills.
  • Experience writing high-quality, well-architected, and well-documented code.
  • Familiarity with kernel performance analysis and optimization.
  • Excellent understanding of operating system concepts and kernel components.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of x86 assembler, Python, Perl, C++ and other programming languages a plus
  • Experience with SMP, memory and CPU power management, multi-tasking, device drivers a plus
  • Understanding of distributed system concepts a plus. 
  • Good understanding of modern Intel and AMD x86-based processor architectures a plus
  • Experience in designing and developing kernel level projects 
  • Experience in developing modular and extensible code.
  • Familiarity with one or more virtualization platforms a plus.
