Director, Engineering

Reports to: General Manager GE Aerospace, Innoveering Division

GE Aerospace, Innoveering Division headquartered in Bohemia, New York, is a leading Research and Development Engineering center for the design & development of prototype scram jet and hypersonic propulsion systems within GE Aerospace.

The company provides a full range of Technology Products in Propulsion, Test & Evaluation as well as Advanced Systems & Controls. The company embraces a mission for the advancement of aerospace propulsion to serve our nation’s military and commercial needs. 

The company maintains a close strategic and technology working relationship with GE Edison Works, GE Advanced Materials Operations and GE GRC Research. The company supports all the military services, DARPA, as well as NASA and all the leading propulsion and airframe manufacturers. 

Key Areas of

Responsibilities: The Director of Engineering will be charged with managing the primary engineering discipline tracks of Design, Analysis, Propulsion & Project Engineering. You will work with and have input as well with Test Engineering and Facility Engineering as needed.

  • Serve as a core member of the Innoveering Leadership Team and collaborate directly with the Company Chief Engineer on a regular basis.
  • Will serve as a member of the Executive Advisory Board as well as the Recruiting Executive Committee.
  • Oversee the development and execution of engineering budgets and operating plans. Monitor metrics and take action to ensure performance to delivery, quality, and service expectation.
  • Build and maintain a professional engineering organization which will support production, quality, customer and business strategy goals.
  • Monitor engineering department’s productivity and manage work schedules, PTO requests and training absences.
  • Manage direct and indirect labor in collaboration with Program Management and Finance.
  • Actively use SME’s as needed. Ensure that SME’s are engaged and contributing to program and research initiatives and are on direct charge as it best applies.
  • Ensure the effective and timely oversight of technical authority and governance on all technical changes and compliance to design intent and engineering standards reporting such issues to the Chief Engineer as needed.
  • Actively contribute to the development of company standards and best practice method of engineering.
  • Represent engineering in strategic product development review in collaboration with Business Development and proposal activity.
  • Maintain an active and positive communication / working relationship with the Leadership Team.
  • Develop a positive and collaborative communication and working together relationship with GE.
  • Support the in-house Test organization as required and or requested.
  • Work closely in managing staff assignments to programs with the Director of Program Management.
  • Ensure that all workplaces are safe, well maintained (housekeeping) and equipped with the tools necessary to meet program requirements.
  • Work closely with Facilities to ensure engineering as well as Operations and Testing requirements are met.
  • Ensure that quality policy and systems are followed and meet customer and applicable government and certifying agency standards, but also help drive continuous improvement of products and services.
  • Quarterly report out to the Chief Engineer and the General Manager on staffing levels, shortages and plans to address to ensure program performance.
  • Ensure that Engineering staffing requirements are met, both through external recruiting and ongoing training and development of team members at an individual and team level. This includes active succession planning and the delivery of robust training and personal and professional/technical development programs.

THE INDIVIDUAL:

Preferred Minimum

Experience: 

  • 15+ years in related Propulsion Engineering and Engineering Management as well as Program Management experience in a Matrix Management Environment
  • Active DOD Secret Clearance

Education: An undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering & Advance Degree in Engineering Preferred

Experience: The successful candidate will have spent the bulk of their career in and around high technology development ideally touching the aerospace and defense sector. They will have demonstrated an ability to work as part of a leadership team with direct responsibility for Managing an Engineering Organization. They will demonstrate a sound experience level in R&D Propulsion development.

A hands-on leader who has a blend of tactical, strategic skills and excellent people skills. You must be comfortable in leading the organization as a change agent with vision and a plan for company growth and personal professional growth for staff. Innoveering operates in a fast-paced business where relationships are built and expanded based upon the ability to perform to customer needs. The Director will foster a strong set of organizational management skills in the Engineering Team.

Innoveering has modified its business model to embrace a greater relationship with GE. This relationship has placed Innoveering at the center of GE’s Hypersonic Strategic business enterprise which will require the Engineering leadership to foster a collaborative operating approach, personality, bearing and knowledge that will allow him or her to build a strong relationship with GE Engineering Leadership at the corporate level.

Personality: The selected candidate should have a personality that can be described as demanding but pleasant, foster excellent communication and adopt a hands on style with the engineers. Be available and encourage excellence and growth thru communication, feedback and support. The Director will understand the challenges of a DOD R&D business, possess the grit and determination of an accountable leader and have demonstrated the ability to persevere in tough situations. The Director will be mature and sensitive to the culture and style that is Innoveering and have ethics that are beyond reproach. An aggressive proactive nature is imperative.

The base pay range for this position is $174,600 to $290,900. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on April 15, 2024.
