Global Impact Investing Network

Special Commitments

One of the central tenets of impact investing is the practice of impact measurement and management (IMM). Through this practice, investors define specific impact performance objectives for an investment portfolio and gather and use data about the social and environmental performance of the investments in order to maximize their positive impacts. Driving a sophisticated, high integrity, and practical practice of IMM among investors has been a core GIIN function since the organization’s founding in 2009. Our IMM work has included the development of IRIS+, a system for investors to use in measuring and optimizing impact performance, numerous guidance pieces, resources, thought leadership, and engagement with a myriad of industry stakeholder communities to influence the trajectory of discussions and practice in the broader financial industry.

We are now seeking a Director to lead our IMM engagement, partnerships, and thought leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Impact Measurement and Management Thought Leadership
  • Define and drive the execution of a strategy designed to deepen the sophistication of impact measurement and management practice in the impact investing industry, including resources, tools, thought pieces, and guidance for investors.
  • Collaborate with GIIN teams to ensure intellectual cohesion across our activities and embed learnings from the IMM team into the portfolios of other teams, and vice versa.
  • Advocacy, Partnerships, and Thought Leadership
  • Develop and execute a partnership strategy necessary to shape the narrative on investor practice in impact measurement and management; represent the GIIN in industry working groups, stakeholder consultations, and the like.
  • Collaborate with other GIIN initiatives to shape and message GIIN’s strategic viewpoint on critical topics, such as investor contribution.
  • Collaborate with other GIIN initiatives in representing and advocating for impact investing and impact management practice in the sustainability, regulatory, impact measurement, and financial industry communities, working groups, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Management & Leadership
  • Provide input to GIIN’s leadership on strategic direction from the perspective of impact measurement and management practice and other matters of organizational importance.
  • Support the GIIN’s fundraising efforts, including providing inputs on proposals and drafting progress reports. o Collaborate with other GIIN functions to engage stakeholder relationships in a way that creates maximum benefit for the organization as a whole.
  • Manage the overall program portfolio, personnel and budget allocation, updating frequently to reflect shifting priorities and available resources.
  • Directly and indirectly supervise, lead, and inspire one or more high-performing staff members.
  • Location: This position will be based in our New York City office with significant remote work flexibility offered through the GIIN’s hybrid in-person/remote work model. Candidates must possess valid authorization to work in the United States that does not require employment visa sponsorship.
  • Compensation: The GIIN is committed to pay equity. The salary range for this role is between $108,000-$122,000, with exact salary depending on experience, with an excellent benefits package.
  • We aim to offer competitive salaries and benefits and are committed to equity, trust, and transparency in compensation. Basing compensation on someone’s willingness and ability to negotiate or on their prior salary leads to wide inequities and bias in how people are paid, particularly for groups experiencing historical oppression. Therefore, we do not ask for prior pay history from our candidates and our offer-making process is negotiation-free for salaries and benefits.
  • We determine the best possible salary offer based on relevant experience and the extent to which candidates demonstrate the competencies for the role during the entire hiring process. The GIIN also uses our annual performance evaluation process at the end of each year to determine raises and promotions.

Ideal candidates will thrive in the face of complexity and be able to make key decisions in the face of ambiguity. The ideal candidate will excel at influencing through relationships, both bilateral partnerships and stakeholder-driven processes.

Candidates will have:

  • Knowledge of impact measurement and management practice as it sits in the investor community: Demonstrated knowledge of how impact measurement and management appears at each stage of an investment process, from portfolio construction to investment selection and onwards.
  • Practical understanding of the processes, prioritization factors, challenges, and questions facing investors as they deepen their engagement with IMM practice, collect data and use data to make management decisions.
  • Knowledge of and relationships in the academic and technical worlds of evaluation is a plus.
  • Practical grounding in theory of change development, including indicator selection, and application to an investment process.
  • Experience with conducting impact measurement and management or monitoring and evaluation as relevant to social and environmental impact in an investment or business setting strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing collaborative industry processes:
  • Demonstrated experience managing, influencing, and shaping industry working groups and consultations, particularly those engaging corporates or investors in impact measurement and management practice, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience navigating multi-stakeholder relationship dynamics with the ability to handle potential conflicts with sensitivity and empathy.
  • Thriving through changing market dynamics
  • Internal team management experience: Proven experience managing teams towards success, supporting the professional development of direct reports, and managing resources.
  • Collaborative, progress-oriented external leadership skills
  • Professional, empathetic, and clear communicator with an orientation towards collaboration
  • Commitment to equity and justice. Successful candidates will be aware that race, income, age, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender and gender expression, and other identities can play, and have historically played, a role in equity disparities, including within organizations. Successful candidates will be committed to continuous learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion and how to manifest these principles in the workplace.
  • Strategy development and execution skills:
  • Demonstrated experience in strategy development and translation to project planning and execution, especially in the face of ambiguity and complexity.
  • Creative and solutions-oriented problem-solving skills
  • Exemplary oral and written communications skills
  • 10-15 years’ work experience in a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
