Position Overview

Under general supervision, your responsibility as a THIRD SHIFT OPTICIAN (10:30pm-7am) will be to conventionally grind and polish optical materials to a specific tolerance. You may be assigned both flat surfaces and spherical lenses and mirrors and work with a variety of materials used at different wavelengths. Responsibilities include:

  • Set up, monitor and adjust the process as required to meet the prescribed specifications
  • Perform in-process metrology
  • Bevel large and small substrates along with edge polishing processes
  • Set up and operate twin side equipment 
  • Set up and maintain continuous polishers for large and small optical substrates
  • Support with Optical surface inspections
  • Cross train with team members
  • Comply with all safety and health regulations
  • Clean machinery and maintain cleanliness in the work area

Perform these and train on other activities which may be assigned or which may occur in the normal course of work.

Education / Certifications

HS diploma. Technical high school and/or trade school degree preferred.

Experience/Qualifications

  • 5-10 years’ relevant experience grinding and polishing optics
  • Substantial understanding of the general aspects of the job with a broad understanding of the detailed aspects of the job
  • Able to read, understand and follow written instructions
  • Comfortable working with a variety of optical polishing and lapping machines
  • Good math aptitude
  • Knowledge of the metric system and ability to do simple conversions from the English to the Metric system.
  • Attention to detail
  • Appreciation for the delicacy of the work – execute proper optics safety techniques

Additional considerations and requirements:

  • Standing for long periods of time (1-2 hours at a time)
  • Lifting delicate optics
  • Working with chemicals and solvents
  • Working in a noisy environment requiring use of ear protection
  • Working in an environment requiring temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Adhering to all safety and health regulations and wear PPE as required

NOTE THAT THIRD SHIFT HOURS ARE FROM 10:30pm-7am. TRAINING WILL BE DONE ON FIRST SHIFT. YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL PAY
