The Integrated Mission Systems Engineering division is looking for an exceptionally motivated Principal Systems Engineer. We are seeking candidates that are passionate about systems engineering with the ability to thrive in a highly technical environment. Additionally, this position will be responsible for motivating team members, facilitating meetings, cultivating and reinforcing appropriate group values, norms and behaviors, and identifying, analyzing and correcting problems.

As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will be working on communication solutions integrated on strategic platforms. Main responsibility is to focus on customer needs and requirements in order to design, develop, document and test hardware and software systems, ranging from black box to the extremely complex end-to-end platform systems.

As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will work on projects spanning the entire development lifecycle, including pursuit and order capture, system design, requirements, definition, requirement allocation and traceability, software/hardware development & integration and Systems Test & Verification/Validation.

The candidate will work closely with fellow systems engineers, Project Engineers, Product Line / Program Management, software, hardware, electrical and support staff to assure defined requirements are consistently met in all phases of the product lifecycle.

A qualified candidate will be a US Citizen, ability to obtain a clearance, or have an active secret or top secret clearance. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • As a technical expert, provide expertise in the decomposition of customer specifications and internal system level requirements into sub-system and piece part requirements, and make recommendations for the generation of verification criteria and plans for those requirements.
  • Responsible for leading collaboration amongst the functional teams by implementing an executable strategy and establishing operational plans for the work area to ensure that scope, cost and schedule meets internal goals and fully satisfies external contractual commitments.
  • Lead technical proposal preparation and serve as a subject matter expert in non-advocate, internal and customer reviews 
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end systems architecture governance and design principles.
  • Develop and/or utilize prognostic metrics for system design and development. Review metrics and defects trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements. Recommend new approaches, tools and techniques that drive continuous improvement in technical development processes.
  • Ensures the development and management of technical risks and develops and executes mitigation plans
  • Recommends investments or changes in technology, resources, procedures, equipment, systems, or other assets to improve the quality of the organization's projects.
  • Strong capability to mentor teams on the utilization of internal processes, methods, and tools for systems development and documentation efforts. 
  • Recommends and helps implement new approaches, tools, and technique based on needs identified in metric and defect trends on current and related programs
  • This position may require 10 to 20% travel

Basic Qualifications (Required):

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 10 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 7 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Demonstrable high proficiency with multiple years of experience in systems engineering, open systems architectures, model based systems engineering methods, and MBSE tools (SysML, UML, AADL, or equivalent)
  • Broad background in airborne, ground, or space communication programs involving products, systems, and/or services
  • Strong expertise in defining system level design and creating the system, subsystem, item and element requirements including traceability
  • High proficiency with advanced networking concepts
  • Experience with visual modeling and design tools (Enterprise Architect, Cameo, or equivalent)
  • Recent experience and expertise in requirements management tools (DOORS, JAMA, or equivalent)
  • Expertise with applied human factors engineering practices to plan crew systems interfaces for UI/UX and translate these customer requirements into hardware and software solutions.
  • Experience in technical proposal writing - Make/Buy Decision-making and trade study experience 
  • Experience in training and mentoring less experienced leaders and engineers
  • Strong understanding of the Change Management processes and tools
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Practical experience with DODAF architecture views and demonstrable proficiency with the framework
  • Experience with performance modeling (e.g. MATLAB, OPNET, Riverbed Modeler, or similar tools)
  • Recent experience and expertise in Atlassian (e.g. JIRA/Bamboo) suite of tools 
  • Experience with product line management of communications, RF, PNT solutions, datalink solutions or airborne products
  • Design, test, analyze, integrate, qualify and document hardware of moderate to high complexity to ensure the electrical and/or mechanical design is appropriate for the project/product design approach
  • Experience with embedded (low-level) software development, application software development, and/or hardware development
  • Practical experience and ability with Risk Management Framework (RMF) and DevSecOps in context to design considerations of solutions such as MLS. 
  • Strong understanding of waterfall and Agile development processes 
  • Experience running multiple complex projects that include teams from multiple locations and countries
  • Many years of experience with communication systems design or information processing design that includes simulation and analysis
  • Experience and proficiency with project performance measurement, tracking methods, and tools
  • Experience using SEER parametric estimating software for bid & proposal, or similar tools
  • Active or current DoD Top Secret preferred.
