The Materials Engineering position is in the Materials and Process Engineering Department of the Mechanical Subsystems Directorate. This organization is responsible for the full spectrum of Materials and Process engineering, including polymers, plastics, elastomers, metals ceramics, glasses, lubricants, coatings, composites, energetics, adhesive, sealants, and electronic material. The department is responsible for the development, selection, specification, testing, evaluation, characterization, and innovation in Materials and Processing. The department performs failure analysis and provides material support to the supply base. This position is located in Tucson, AZ.
This individual will provide Materials Engineering solutions for adhesives and adhesive bond joints. This includes development, selection, and specification of materials and the associated implementation processes. It also includes testing, failure analysis, and the development of corrective actions related to materials problems. The successful candidate will:
- Leverage experience to select materials for new design as well as evaluate and solve materials issues in all cycles of design
- Apply their knowledge of materials science and engineering principles, theories and concepts to the materials needs of systems for implementation into missiles
- Provide technical oversight to suppliers and subcontractors
- Review and disposition subcontract data and change requests; prepare and present data to management, government agencies; and project cost account management
- Apply scientific and engineering principles to engineering characterization, evaluation, and failure analysis of materials
Key Responsibilities (essential functions):
- Select, analyze, test and evaluate materials for missile applications
- Provide technical oversight of subcontracted design activities and technical direction to Materials engineers
- Support failure analysis and corrective action
- Present Materials design models and supporting analyses/test results to internal and customer review meetings
- Support proposals requiring material technologies
- Provide counsel and mentoring for more junior members of the Department
- Test data reduction
- Ensure technical rigor and depth of all deliverables
NOTE: This position can be Salary Grade G09 (Senior Multi-Disciplined Engineer II) or Salary Grade G10 (Principal Multi-Disciplined Engineer) based upon the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
Required Experience, Skills and Education:
- For, Sr. Multi-Disciplined Engineer II - Six (6) years of experience in materials engineering or adhesive bonding.
- For, Principal Multi-Disciplined Engineer - Eight (8) years of experience in materials engineering or adhesive bonding.
- Experience with any of the following:
- Engineering design
- Chemistry and physics of material properties
- Application and processing of materials for implementation into manufacturing
- Testing and evaluation of materials systems
- Military and other Standards for corrosion protection and prevention
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics or other related science or engineering field
- U.S. Citizenship is required
Desired Experience and Skills:
- 12 years of directly related experience in Materials design, development, and test, with at least 10 years of experience in adhesive bonding
- Supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW)
- Demonstrated success as a team leader
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Power Point & Project)
- Project Management as applied to team interaction and deliverables
- Be willing to travel to suppliers and government facilities
- Currently have or be able to obtain a DoD issued Secret security clearance
- Advanced degree in aforementioned disciplines. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
