Job Description: COTS Hardware Infrastructure Engineer

The Radar Controls and Electronics Department in the Electrical Products Directorate at Raytheon Missiles & Defense (RMD) is seeking an Electrical Engineer with a strong COTS computing and networking background to join our Hardware and Infrastructure team implementing the next generation Radar solutions.

This position is for an Electrical Engineer who will work with Product Leads and other team members on a variety of tasks related to the design and development of systems using Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products. Tasks will include: COTS hardware infrastructure system design (e.g. X86-based processors); research and selection of servers, workstations, add-in interface cards, storage devices, and other COTS hardware; BIOS and operating system configuration definition; system prototyping and integration in the lab; and functioning as a valuable member of the team.

The successful candidate will be an innovator and a self-starter, able to complete tasks given minimal direction and goals, and possess good technical aptitude and people skills. They will enjoy being part of our team, working with engineers in other disciplines and understand the multiple facets of a successful system deployment. The candidate must possess strong critical thinking skills and must be able to follow established processes. They must also have experience meeting system requirements, schedule deadlines, and project budgets. For the right candidate, this is a growth position providing the opportunity for further development of COTS RADAR hardware design.

Applicant will work as part of a highly motivated team environment, and will be collaborating with cross-functional project teams making up a larger program or internal research and development efforts. Our engineers are assigned to a manager of approximately 20 employees with similar skills. Each section manager is responsible for their members’ performance, career development, and assigning tasks that balance the employees’ interests with current needs of the project teams.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

This position can be either Senior Electrical Engineer I (G08) or Senior Electrical Engineer II (G09) based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and requirements for the position.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience designing systems using COTS hardware
  • Applied practice and knowledge of emerging and legacy hardware and software, including Unix and Linux operating systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice developing and implementing computing, networking, and information technology infrastructure through a rigorous design and documentation process
  • Experience with taking a system design concept from the block diagram or requirements level and developing a complete COTS-based hardware design and then verifying the design via integration and test plans and activities
  • Experience working in a lab environment and operating standard test equipment including oscilloscopes, processor bus analyzers, emulators, and data capture tools, etc.
  • System level hardware integration and troubleshooting skills

Desired Skills:

  • Current or in-progress computing/networking certification(s) (e.g. CCNA, AWS, CISSP)
  • Experience collaborating in development with hardware engineering disciplines, supply chain, suppliers, field engineering, on-site installation and trades, and Customers to develop and deliver safety critical systems
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written as well as thorough knowledge of all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to support occasional domestic travel and potential international travel
  • Experience with RADAR system hardware
  • Interest and capability in task and team leadership, including: leading teams of 2 to 5 engineers on a common task or group of tasks; managing to a schedule and budget; keeping internal customers advised of status and participating in strategic decisions on planning and execution; estimating and planning new work; a desire to advance along a team leadership track
  • Existing security clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret security clearance
