Role Overview
This position provides leadership for the engineering teams engaged in the design, development, application and support of products, technology, and tools related to Collins Aerospace Avionics Fusion aircraft display products. This individual will lead and mentor Engineering Managers and Technical Program Managers while providing overall department leadership for establishing design plans, execution of the plans, and for the overall management of the engineering department.
Principal Accountabilities
- Program and Product Development Performance - Accountable for estimating, planning and performing to plan for scope, schedule and budget of projects.
- Engineering Practice - Accountable for the organization's use of good engineering practices, including applicable regulatory standards, contractual requirements, and compliance to industry, customer and / or internal processes and standards as appropriate.
- Staffing - Maintains a competent and effective staff through effective selection, recruitment, training, development, mentoring and performance planning of engineering staff, key management and technical personnel.
- Technology - Maintains and augments the organization's intellectual capital in the product domain areas, tools and processes.
- Continuous Improvement - Continually improves the organization's technical competence and ability to execute to committed performance levels using state-of-the art technologies and practices. Maintains awareness of technological trends and frontiers, and the company's competitive position in the specialty areas.
- Strategic Vision - Maintains departmental strategic technical roadmap in support of the Engineering Strategic Planning (ESP) process.
Communications
- Supports Marketing, Sales, Program and Product Management and Customer Service in attracting, obtaining and retaining new company business by preparing timely engineering bid estimates and by communicating technological and product performance capabilities as required.
- Assists in the coordination of company activities by communicating across organizational lines. Makes good use of established technical and program review processes. Utilizes budgeting and forecasting systems appropriately to ensure coordination with other functions within the organization.
Product Quality and Producibility
- Responsible for the quality and certification of product designs and for the long-term support of products in the field. This includes identification of problems, assessment, and timely, proactive response to quality issues arising in the course of business.
- Responsible for forecasting, budgeting and controlling "collateral" support to factory and field service organizations.
Scope of Position
- 4-8: Exempt supervisory consisting of Engineering Managers and Technical Program Managers.
- 80-120: Exempt non-supervisory engineers
Required Qualifications
- This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 10 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 8 years of relevant experience.In the absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required
- Must be able to coordinate departmental activities of subordinate managers and technical support employees.
- Must communicate effectively with senior / executive management and customers.
- Requires an in-depth understanding of technical project management and a demonstrated ability to manage System and Software teams in an integrated Avionics environment
- Consistently looks for ways to maximize opportunities, exceed expectations, and handle unexpected technical challenges.
- Occasional domestic and international travel will be required
- Previous engineering management or other business management background
- Proven Track Record of Performance In Project Execution and Meeting Commitments
