We are a small geographically distributed team working to automate the system administration tasks around the QA environments. We are looking for an additional systems engineer with skills in scripting and virtualisation. Join us if you think automation is king and you want to be part of a small committed team. Scope of Role As a System Engineer you will be responsible for implementing and supporting the Symantec.cloud QA environments. You will be responsible for the design of individual environments on request from the project test leads and for supporting, monitoring and maintaining the existing environments. The QA environment infrastructure is currently being consolidated into a unified virtual infrastructure. You will be part of the project team to implement the virtual infrastructure and continue to automate the tasks around the virtual infrastructure. Responsibilities • Design and build development and QA environments in both hardware and virtualised environments based on project requirements. • Implement virtual infrastructure for development and QA environments. • Automate system administration tasks on Linux and Microsoft platforms. • Write technical documentation in own areas of expertise. • Taking ownership of larger support requests including effort estimation; resource conflict resolution; managing own time; being responsible for following existing processes to communicate updates to the internal customer in a timely manner. • Acting as a nominated environmental lead and carrying out quality project work and documentation to further longer term team goals, whilst ensuring operational tasks do not suffer through good time management skills. • Escalating issues appropriately to the team leader or the request owner as appropriate for timely resolution or wider process improvement. • Monitoring and carrying out preventative maintenance and general administrative tasks relating to supported environments; ensuring the availability of all systems is in line with current and future Operating Level Agreements through proactive problem solving. • Diagnosing and resolving general technical issues on all server operating systems and general network connectivity and configuration. • Building good working relationships with staff from all areas of the business to achieve best results. Qualifications • Experience of working within an internal support role. • Excellent knowledge in all of the following areas, in order of preference: Linux (RedHat/Centos) Administration, Microsoft Server O/S Administration, Network (Cisco) Administration. • Good working knowledge of TCP/IP networking and associated technologies. • Experience of automating cross platform system administration tasks with languages such as Ruby or Perl. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Ability and desire to cross train outside own area of technical expertise • Capable of working on own initiative as well as within a team. • Experience of prioritizing workload in high pressure and time constrained environments. • Demonstrated skills in troubleshooting and ‘thinking on your feet’. • Good understanding of any/all of the following technologies in a commercial environment: VMWare, NetApp, NFS, DNS, Apache, Squid, IIS web server, shell/scripting languages, SNMP, Qmail, LDAP, SMTP, Microsoft SQL Server. ====================​====================​ Symantec is an equal opportunity employer.
