About Big Data Platforms

The Big Data Platforms team powers the most demanding Big Data applications in the industry on some of the largest Hadoop clusters ever built. Yahoo pioneered this level of scale with Hadoop, and Verizon Media continues to be a leader in this space. Our team is made up of several PMCs (Program Management Committee members) and Committers in key Apache open source projects like Hadoop, Storm, and Tez, just to name a few. Our leadership position keeps Verizon Media at the forefront of these projects, both directionally and technically. Position Responsibilities

This part-time intern, working on average 10 hrs per week, will be responsible for bug fixes, small features, and routine maintenance and operations for the Doppler tool. These tasks will include both front-end and back-end changes to the Doppler codebase, as well as customer support. This position is intended to convert an existing intern to a part-time intern, and the tasks will be much like those done by a Doppler intern. 

Position Impact

The impact of Doppler and its team on customers of our grid infrastructure is hard to overstate. This group is generally the first line of support for all grid customers, and Doppler is the portal for access and resources for grid users. Maintaining our current intern as a part-time intern will help our team by allowing the full-time developers to focus more fully on our larger initiatives instead of day-to-day maintenance, our customers by reducing the response time for bugs and smaller feature requests, and the business by contributing to the overall health and continued stability of the Doppler tool. I am confident that this position will lead to happier customers and a better product.

Position Opportunity 

Ultimately, we would like to see this convert into a full-time position (req request for that also filed). Doppler is already a pivotal piece of our grid platform infrastructure, and working on that team allows for exposure to many different areas of both Verizon Media and Verizon. Members of the Doppler team are directly responsible for improving our grid infrastructure usability, having significant impact. All members of the team contribute to that impact.

Position Requirements – 

  • JavaScript, preferably NodeJS and/or front-end frameworks such as Angular, React, or Ember
  • HTML & CSS, preferably previous exposure to Bootstrap
  • Experience with unit-testing frameworks, such as Mocha or Jasmine
  • A customer-first commitment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
