As an intern at the Urban Institute, you’ll work alongside experts across the organization and beyond in the nation’s epicenter of public policy - Washington, DC. Your work will have an impact on real-life, real-time policy issues and discussions. 

How you’ll contribute:

The Justice Policy Center conducts research and evaluations to improve justice policy and practice at the national, state, and local levels. We conduct rigorous evaluations and in-depth data analyses—and we give context to the data through interviews with individuals involved in the justice system at all levels. We also produce reports and provide technical assistance that translate complex research into actionable strategies to enhance the safety and well-being of individuals and communities. The Justice Policy Center is seeking a research intern who can work collaboratively on projects aimed to enhance and measure criminal justice response in the United States.

Responsibilities include:

  • Data Collection
  • Background Research
  • Literature Reviews
  • Data Analysis

What you’ll bring:

The successful candidate will: 

  • Be pursuing a bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS), as a rising junior or senior in criminal justice, sociology, or related field
  • Have strong written and oral communication skills
  • Possess exceptional organizational skills in order to provide support across multiple activities and tasks
  • Have the desire to enhance their research skills

Program Highlights:

  • Paid 10-week program designed to provide students interested in research, public policy issues and organizational operations with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to Urban’s mission
  • Participate in a welcome orientation
  • Network with operations staff, senior professionals and others who will support your professional growth and career interests
  • Participate in intern specific workshops and networking events designed to advance your professional development and build your soft skills
  • Engage in team building activities that forge new friendships with other Urban interns
  • Receive informal feedback and mentoring from your intern manager
  • Present the value of your contribution and what you learned during our End of Summer Lightning Talks
