The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is looking for a Junior Scientist in physical oceanography and/or environmental acoustics, which will be part of Environmental Knowledge and Operational Effectiveness (EKOE) programme. CMRE is looking for key players with the aim to contribute to the surface and underwater capabilities within CMRE and the NATO Nations. Role and Responsibilities: Under the direction and guidance of the Programme Manager and the Project Leader, the incumbent will perform duties such as the following: -Conduct and document theoretical or experimental investigation as part of a team working on environmental characterization research problems focused on oceanographic data collection and analysis and ocean modelling and data-assimilation. -Be able to decompose and coordinate the scientific work of more junior staff and other functions on the above mentioned topics related activities. - Coordinate teams carrying out experimental work at sea, on board the research vessels or in the Centre reach-back facilities. -Produce the CMRE deliverables as well as conference and journal papers, or internal reports. -Assure the quality and time bound of the deliverables. -Attend conferences and meetings as required. Competencies: The ideal candidate should produce new ideas, approaches or insights, a range of solutions to problems and seek opportunities for organizational improvement. Requirements: Education: Ph.D. or MSc in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences or related field. Experience: Ph.D. with minimum 3 years relevant post-doc work experience. Alternatively: minimum 6 years relevant post MSc work experience. • Track of relevant publications and scientific activities. • Knowledge of general programming languages (e.g., Matlab, Python, Fortran). • Experience with oceanographic and/or acoustic data. • Experience with signal processing. • At least two years of experience in the use and exploitation of METOC information, preferably in the underwater domain. Knowledge of standard file formats is required. Assets: Education: Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences or related field. Experience: • Advanced programming skills in Fortran language. • Experience with signal processing and applications to real data. • Experience with computer vision algorithms and related software frameworks. • Knowledge and experience in probabilities and statistics, uncertainty processing, information/data quality. Language Skills: Most of the work of the CMRE is conducted in the English Language, and therefore a thorough knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is essential. Work environment: • The incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties on board CMRE’s or other Scientific Vessels and Boats, and may be called upon to perform like duties elsewhere in the organization. • (Flexibility Clause) In order for the organization to deal with emergent requirements, the incumbent may be required to perform other related duties as directed (in particular, the incumbent can expect to work as a member of Working Groups, Project Teams and similar organizational units for defined periods of time). • Annual TDY Requirement: The incumbent may be called upon to go on temporary duty (TDY), both within and outside NATO’s boundaries. • The nature of this position may require the staff member at times to be called upon to travel for work and/or to work outside normal office hours. • The work will be performed in an office, laboratory or workshop environment, or on board ships, both in port and at sea. Slightly undesirable working conditions may apply at times. The risk of injury is categorized as: Light Risk.
