The Economist is seeking an experienced insight professional to join our Insight & Data Science Team as a Lead Insight Analyst. Our Insight & Data Science Team is a central source of data skills working across all parts of the business. As part of this team you will be taking a highly visible role in the use of data from our digital products for decision-making.

You will work with product managers, business stakeholders and editors to understand their processes and the challenges they face. You will get to know our raw analytics data inside out and find opportunities to use it to drive change. You will also take an active role in mentoring and allocating work to junior analysts. As an equal partner in strategic discussions you will be making recommendations to the business and influencing the future direction of our digital products and customer experience.

We are looking for candidates with significant prior experience of web and/or mobile analytics data and the use of insight to drive business decisions. Experience using SQL and Python to analyse large datasets would be advantageous. Experience working in an online retail or digital subscription business would also be advantageous but not essential.

Accountabilities

How will you contribute?

  • Understand the challenges stakeholders face and translate those into insight tasks
  • Work in SQL to join and aggregate raw analytics, email and transactional data
  • Delegate work to junior analysts and support them to deliver projects successfully
  • Participate in strategic discussion and make recommendations based on insights you uncover
  • Collaborate with product teams and data scientists to deliver a programme of A/B testing

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • An understanding of and experience working with analytics data (e.g. Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics or similar)
  • Significant experience using insights derived from digital analytics for decision-making
  • Ability to examine data critically to extract meaningful insights
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • The ability to mentor junior team members
  • The following would also be advantageous:
  • Experience using SQL and Python for large-scale analysis
  • Experience working in a digital subscription or online retail business
  • A meticulous approach to all work, completed to high level of quality
  • The ability to work under time pressure while providing high quality output
  • The ability to work on your own with conviction to prioritize workload
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
