The Economist is seeking an experienced insight professional to join our Insight & Data Science Team as a Senior Insight Analyst. Our Insight & Data Science Team is a central source of data skills working across all parts of the business. As part of this team you will be using SQL and other tools to connect raw data from our analytics, transactional and email marketing systems, with the goal of understanding our customer behaviour.

You will work with product managers, developers, business stakeholders and editors to make sure they receive relevant data and insights. You will make sure we’re measuring the right things and are focussed on the biggest opportunities. Your work and the recommendations you make will help The Economist decide how our products and business strategy evolve.

We are looking for candidates with prior experience of analytics data and using SQL for data analysis. Experience in an online retail or digital subscription business as well as working in Python would all be advantageous but are not essential.

We believe data is essential to the success of our business. This role is an opportunity to produce insights that impact real decisions being taken every day at The Economist.


How will you contribute?

  • Understand the challenges stakeholders face and translate those into data requests
  • Work in SQL to join and aggregate raw analytics, email and transactional data
  • Visualise the data and make recommendations based on the insights you uncover
  • Design and deliver regular reports inspired by your insight work
  • Collaborate with Data Scientists to analyse and interpret A/B tests

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Experience using SQL to analyse large datasets
  • An understanding of and experience working with analytics data (e.g. Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics or similar)
  • Ability to examine data critically to extract meaningful insights
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • The following would also be advantageous:
  • Experience using Python for data analysis
  • Experience working in a digital subscription or online retail business
  • A meticulous approach to all work, completed to high level of quality
  • The ability to work under time pressure while providing high quality output
  • The ability to work on your own with conviction to prioritize workload
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
