Data Center of Excellence

Data Center of Excellence (COE) is a group within the Transformation & Tech COO Division that focuses on data as a key priority of Morgan Stanley?s overall Strategy. Data CoE develops common principles for ownership, distribution and consumption of data, tooling and standards for data accessibility, a framework for governing data and help address data architecture and data quality issues for new and existing initiatives at the firm by collaborating heavily with various business units and technology functions in the firm.

Position Description

Data is at the forefront of most business functions as firms look to streamline their business processes to cut costs as well as leverage capabilities such as advanced analytics, big data, AI and machine learning to create new insights. Business decisions will require availability of accurate, timely and consistent data. To achieve this, especially in a large enterprise like Morgan Stanley, with thousands of systems and tens of thousands of databases, we need to solve a few challenges ?

? Data Catalog - Provide tools to catalog data definitions and additional metadata that provide context and better understanding of data.

? Data Ownership ? Provide mechanisms to identify and document data owners, system owners and other roles responsible for data.

? Data Authority and sourcing ? Document and ratify golden sources of data and ensure data is being consumed from the right sources with the right quality controls in place

? Data Accessibility - Develop frameworks to consume the data such as API?s, analytics toolsets etc.

? Data Usage - Provide tools to capture relevant information on data usage to perform effective change management, respond to incidents, perform disaster recovery etc. in a timely and efficient manner

To address these challenges, the Data Governance Technology team within Data CoE works on providing tools to document, discover, search and visualize how data is used in the firm. The team will also provide API?s and integrations with other technologies in the firm to capture and discover this information in order to support and promote automation. The Data Governance Technology team builds in house tools as well as works with vendor tools in this space in order to address these problems. We work with standard technologies like Java and relational stores, NOSQL stores like Stardog and Marklogic that use W3C standards such as RDF, SPARQL and GraphQL as well as vendor tools in this space such as Collibra. On the UI side, we work with Angular, D3 and HTML5 for visualization of metadata.
