We are looking for volunteers to support our Supported Internship Programme at our classroom in Kingston. The sessions are hosted in the United Reformed Church in Kingston, and they will run on weekdays during the day (usually between (9:30am and 4pm). 

We deliver classroom and community based sessions to young people, aged between 16 and 25, to prepare them for work, and support them to improve their numeracy and literacy skills. Along with Mencap staff and other volunteers, you will be supporting people on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.

You will support them with the session activities, helping to keep them motivated and engaged. You will support the tutor and other learning support assistants to ensure each learner is achieving and learning within the classroom. Classroom volunteers also have the opportunity to support out students on trips, including museums, shopping centres and out in their community.

When do I need to be available?

Classroom sessions run will run on weekdays in the United Reformed Church in Kingston. Depending on the support needed and your availability we would agree a relevant timetable. Any support is beneficial, whether you can volunteer for one or all of the days!

As a Mencap Classroom Volunteer you will be:

  • 18 or over
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Reliable and patient
  • Able to use initiative 
  • Accepting of others who might be different to yourself
  • Have good communication and listening skills
  • Willing and able to provide references and complete a DBS check
