Job Description & Qualifications

The Customer Interaction and Experience Development (CIED) organization delivers customer experiences and physical/digital interaction guidelines in order to build Ford Motor Company affinity. The Experience Development Engineer serves as the customer Point-Of-View (POV) owner for features that build into experiences. Additionally, the Experience Development Engineer is responsible for delivering high-level requirements documents so downstream work partners can develop software graphics and specifications. 

Our diverse Experience Development Team – located in greater Detroit, - is comprised of Integration Engineers, Human Factors Attribute Engineers, UI and UX designers, and project managers. Together our team works to understand our changing world, identify new opportunities, and take action to design and innovate for the future of mobility – Ford’s vehicles and surrounding experiences.

In this position, you will take the elements of an exceptional mobility experience and distill the enablers down to discrete actionable items that will be deployed by the program teams. Simply, we seek to define “How It Works” for our customers. This requires close collaboration with Design, HMI, UX, Marketing, Engineering and Program Management.

Responsibilities: 

  • Translate customer experiences into engineering parameters and ensure the original intent is achieved through the design proposals
  • Design, develop and deliver innovative solutions for Ford products that would improve our customer satisfaction
  • Serve as central lead to deliver specific projects and features that enable User Experiences
  • Lead issue resolution and coordinate delivery between multiple Functions (Corporate Design, Vehicle Engineering, Vehicle Operations, Design and Release Engineering, Suppliers, etc.) to ensure designs are compatible with customer experiences; attribute targets, corporate requirements, service, Assembly, etc.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop new vehicle features
  • Cascade requirements to functional teams for new physical and digital features
  • Report on feature development status to program tracking teams

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or a Customer-Centered Discipline
  • Automotive experience via a full-time position or internship
  • Strong sense of customer empathy, problem identification and resolution
  • Familiarity with systems engineering
  • Passion for User Experience and Customer-Centered Design
  • Ability to translate abstract concepts into actionable items for implementation
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Skills
  • Excellent teamwork, leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills required
  • Ability to present findings and POV effectively with senior management and other organizations
  • Passion for engineering and product excellence
  • Comfortable working on changing demands and early vehicle program work
  • Self-starter with ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with minimal direction; comfortable with changing environment of early Program work
  • Ability to create lo-fidelity prototypes with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, 3D Printing, Prototyping Software
  • Comfortable working on both electrical and mechanical projects
  • Willingness to learn new tools to continuously improve skillsets
