The Securities Operations & Accounting group (SOA) in the Controllers Division/Corporate Finance is responsible for the settlement, clearing, custody, accounting and regulatory reporting for securities within the available-for-sale and held-to-maturity investment portfolios, as well as the Wells Fargo funding products (debt). SOA is responsible for the maintenance, control and data integrity of the related accounting systems of record.

The successful candidate for this role will be an accountable, self-starting leader with a drive to complete objectives at a high standard both at a project level and daily tasks. The successful Lead candidate will be responsible for managing reporting and analytics function within the Change Management group of the SOA Systems Team. The Lead will evaluate, recommend, and implement strategies for developing and utilizing technical resources to enable initiatives that predict, improve, and measure business success. This requires a full understanding of business objectives and underlying drivers to ensure application in the business processes. Additionally, strong leadership skills are required to develop a team to high performance to deliver high quality products. Some travel will be required.

This Lead role will be responsible for executing a variety of projects to improve effectiveness of the finance systems used within SOA. This team will lead, plan, and execute projects related to a number of different finance and accounting systems related to securities and operational processes within SOA. Numerous projects of this nature will be balanced at all times and range in size from small to very large. These systems projects relate to portfolio accounting sub-ledger systems and will include legacy platform replacements, portfolio asset migrations, and technology upgrades.

The Lead is expected to understand the current accounting policies and practices within SOA and accounting configuration within the finance systems. This Lead is expected to understand the current state for system and business process flows, particularly how accounting is impacted by projects undertaken by SOA. This Lead will assist SOA managers with all aspects of the implementation lifecycle including: business requirement, configuration review, testing, data migration, conversion, training, and go-live support.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading project team in efforts related to two accounting software applications problem-ticket resolution, mid-sized migration projects from other software applications, system application upgrades, application new functionality initiatives;
  • Development of specific technical accounting expertise in areas such as:

o Amortization / accretion of basis adjustments under the effective interest method in accordance with FAS91,

o Security impairments

o Security pricing & valuation

o Hedge accounting

o FX translations and re-measurement

o Intercompany accounting

o Bond accounting

o Non-marketable equity securities

  • Drafting and maintaining project-related documents (PDD, BRD. Test Plan) for all types of application initiatives, including upgrades, patches, new functionality, change in accounting guidance,
  • Training, mentoring, assessing team of three to seven team members in analytics roles;
  • Leveraging multiple internal or external information sources; managing and prioritizing multiple complex projects and project teams; and maintaining necessary processes, controls and procedures to ensure data accuracy and integrity.
  • Ensuring adherence and compliance to data management regulations and policies.
  • Participating in or leading the business-side efforts in software applications development work.
  • Presenting analyses and resulting recommendations to senior leadership
  • Providing leadership to the transformation of data into information and providing information and strategic insight to assist leaders' decision-making relative to corporate products, services, and process improvements
  • Evaluating, recommending, and implementing strategies for developing and utilizing technical resources to predict, improve and measure the success of fundamentals and new initiatives linked to business outcomes.
  • Participate in meetings with business, project manager and IT to identify, gather, and document both high-level and detailed business requirements.
  • Perform business analysis to help define solution options and recommendations, including pros/cons and rationale for recommendations
  • Working with internal business partners to define issues and information needs and translating them into specific requirements and design recommendations to support business initiatives and projects;
  • Development of test cases/test scripts to accomplish testing for each accounting event
  • Researching and resolving test defects within the software functionality
  • Participation in unit, functional and user-acceptance test phases
  • Providing support to system end-users, including training, troubleshooting, problem resolution for data-related issues, workflow-related issues, application code-related issues;
  • Establish strong relationships with various functions and businesses throughout Wells Fargo and SOA;
  • Facilitate working groups tasked with solving specific challenges within the organization
  • Working closely with software vendor subject matter experts to implement new functionality and troubleshoot problems

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following: analytics, reporting, financial modeling, statistical modeling, finance, or accounting

Desired Qualifications

  • A BS/BA degree or higher in a quantitative field such as applied math, statistics, engineering, physics, accounting, finance, economics, econometrics, computer sciences, or business/social and behavioral sciences with a quantitative emphasis
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to turn findings into executable plans to meet business objectives
  • Ability to read and interpret legal documents
  • Securities industry experience
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated analytical experience assessing large volumes of data;
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience working with complex spreadsheet-based functions
  • Demonstrated proficiency with problem resolution within software applications;
  • Working knowledge of accounting concepts for capital markets products on both the asset-side and liability-side of the balance sheet (bonds, equities, hedges, available-for-sale securities, held-to-maturity securities, use of securities as collateral, valuation)
  • Working knowledge of capital markets operations (trade settlement standards, custody operations, pricing, collateral optimization strategies).
  • Experience developing and writing business/functional requirements
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency for detailed documentation
  • Experience with the standard SDLC lifecycle including all aspects related to application-related testing
  • Thoroughly detail-oriented and able to validate work product of yourself and others
  • Displays perseverance and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Flexibility to change roles, adjust priorities and/or cover multiple project initiatives
  • Willingness to travel between U.S. domestic office locations (10-15% expected)
  • Professional work experience in a bank, insurance company, consulting firm, or equivalent financial institution
  • Knowledge of WallStreet System, SimCorp Dimension, Quality Center and Blackrock
