Position Summary

The Department of Statistics and Probability (STT) at Michigan State University (MSU) plans to fill one Fixed-term Assistant/Associate/Full Professor to serve as the Hannan Visiting Scholar in theoretical statistics and probability, during the Fall 2024 semester. The candidate will be expected to teach one course related to the candidate’s research during the academic year of the appointment. This position is for a one-year Fixed-term Assistant/Associate/Full Professor to serve as the Hannan Endowed Visiting Scholar in Statistics and Probability, and can potentially be renewed for additional years upon successful completion of the first year.

James (Jim) Hannan was a founding member of the Department of Statistics (later to become the Department of Statistics and Probability) in 1955. Jim played a central role in the department, and enjoyed the challenge of creating clean, concise proofs. Above all, he understood and appreciated the importance of mathematics to the development of probability and statistics. This prestigious position, thanks to the Hannan Endowment fund established by Jim’s wife, Bettie Hannan, is devoted to stimulating faculty members, enhancing the research atmosphere, and contributing to graduate education in theoretical statistics and/or probability at MSU STT.

MSU STT is seeking candidates with a Ph.D. and a strong research background in the field of theoretical statistics and/or probability. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the potential of creating a constructive collaboration with MSU STT members. Commitment to teaching and mentoring the students is also expected since the position will entail a light teaching load and will contribute to the overall advancement of educational goals in the department. Initiatives on part of the candidate to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the MSU community is highly desirable.

The department of STT at MSU has leading research groups in both theoretical statistics and probability, with broad applications in many disciplines, and values the full spectrum of research across theoretical and methodological development, computational methods, and applications. Additionally, STT is home to a vibrant graduate program in Statistics, an MS in Data Science program, and grants BS/BA degrees in Statistics.
