The Senior Analyst or Analyst II will be a driven analytical professional with the strong ability to effectively partner across the organization. This position will serve as a key finance resource for CarMax, actively providing value-added financial analysis and reporting to operational partners. They will be part of a team accountable for delivering comprehensive analyses, insight, and visibility on the core drivers of store profitability and SG&A, as well as the financial impact of key strategic initiatives. They will work closely with many areas of the company including Corporate FP&A, Strategy, Store Operations and Business Operations.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Leverage organizational partnerships to deliver comprehensive analysis and outlooks for areas such as store profitability, store SG&A, and strategic initiatives
  • Create transparent financial models to quantify financial expectations and validate results of strategic initiatives
  • Serve as a lead partner for store profitability, store SG&A, and strategic initiative financial impact, while actively providing insights and recommendations
  • Design, produce, and deliver key management reports and presentations, including but not limited to Executive Committee and Board of Directors presentations
  • Support FP&A’s financial planning tool by ensuring accurate and efficient integration of store SG&A expenses into the tool

Purpose of the role

The associate who fills this role will help drive meaningful change throughout the organization through timely and actionable financial analysis. The analyst will deliver monthly, QTD, and YTD comprehensive analysis of ongoing store SG&A performance. They will also develop and deliver SG&A performance forecasts, annual budget, and long-range plans. Finally, they will establish and leverage world class business partnerships to identify solutions to opportunities and risks to drive improvements for CarMax.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated top caliber analysis, strategic thinking, and financial modeling skills
  • Ability to apply business and technical knowledge to evaluate and solve complex problems, produce results, and make recommendations
  • Analytical curiosity and ability to flex between big picture strategic thinking and sharp attention to detail
  • Ability to develop, adjust and execute plans to obtain desired, timely results
  • Ability to deliver great results while simultaneously managing several projects
  • Ability to provide value-added recommendations through creative solutioning and consideration of interdependencies and impact on the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships throughout the organization, and collaborate with other departments
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and influence business partners and peers through expression of innovative ideas and embracing change; willingness to challenge upwards appropriately in the best interest of CarMax
  • Experience organizing and leading productive and effective group discussions
  • Proven ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and open manner through verbal, written, and non-verbal methods, to audiences of various sizes and levels; Experience developing and delivering effective presentations
  • Passion for business and desire to be a strong business leader
  • Desire and proven ability to use experience and knowledge to train and develop others
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance or other business or quantitative related discipline
  • MBA a plus
  • Four to six years of relevant FP&A and/or analytical experience, preferably in a multi-unit retail environment
  • Experience/Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint required
  • Enterprise Financial Planning Tools (Hyperion, SQL, etc.) and Tableau Business Intelligence tool a plus
