The Position : Full-Time Instructor, User Experience Design Immersive

User Experience Design Immersive (UXDI) is a rigorous 10-week/full-time educational experience where students obtain the skills to take on new careers as junior-level UX designers. We are currently looking for new instructors to join the instructional team.

Why teach UXDI?

Teaching provides an opportunity to deepen your own technical skills (and to hone leadership and communication skills as well) while also giving back to the community and making an impact on the lives of your students. For some students, taking a course like UXDI can be truly life-changing, allowing them access to a career and a community that might otherwise have been totally out of reach.

What do we teach? 

User Experience Design Immersive is ten weeks long and is composed of five distinct units, each tied to a deliverable project.

  • Unit 1 : UX Foundations (1 wk)
    Students are introduced to the basics of UX design, including sketching, user research, and user testing.

  • Unit 2 : The UX Design Process (2 wks)
    Students begin to explore all of the different stages of the design process, starting with research and information architecture and ending with UI design and prototyping.

  • Unit 3 : Designing New Features for Existing Products (2 wks)
    UX design is framed within the context of product design and product management; students learn about competitive analysis, creating personas & scenarios, product roadmaps, and feature prioritization.

  • Unit 4 : Visual Design and Front-End Development (2 wks)
    Students get an opportunity to round out their UX skills by learning some of the fundamentals of visual design (like layout, color, etc) and front-end development (like basic HTML and CSS).

  • Unit 5 : Client Work (3 wks)
    Now that the students have some experience under their belt, they begin working with a client on an actual design project, which they present at the end of the unit.

This is a wide range of topics, so we're not necessarily looking for someone to be an expert in every area; however, we are looking for instructors to be able to at least speak intelligently about each of these subjects.

  • You have 4 - 5 years of experience working in user experience design.

  • You have fluency in some or all of the following topics: the UX Process, User Research and Personas, Usability Testing, UX Analysis, Information Architecture, Interface Design, Wireframing, Prototyping, Analytics and Optimization, Mobile UX, and/or HTML/CSS.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • As part of the instructional team, teach the 10-week User Experience Design Immersive course (Mon-Fri, 9 am - 5:30 pm) and participate in 1-2 weeks of planning before each session begins. Instructors will need to commit 10 - 20 hours a week to working on curriculum/preparing to teach.

  • Work closely with one to two co-instructors or teaching assistants to provide students with meaningful and prompt feedback on their progress.

  • Guide students through development of a stellar final project that will showcase their abilities to hiring managers.
  • Work regularly with your course producer to improve your teaching technique, in order to best meet the needs and learning styles of your students.

  • Facilitate a dynamic and collaborative classroom community.

  • Inspire students to persevere through the challenges of solving user experience design problems.

  • Occasionally (~1 to 2 times per quarter) participate in evening information sessions and events geared towards prospective students.
