Description

The University of Washington (UW) Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period and an expected start date of September 16, 2024. The initial appointment will be for a three-year term, eligible for reappointment after a successful second-year review.

All faculty at the UW engage in teaching, scholarship, and service within their school, the University, and their professional community. This position primarily supports the Mathematics B.S. degree program, though mathematics courses in SIAS support several other majors at UW Tacoma, including those in the School of Engineering and Technology (SET). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses including upper- and lower-level statistics and lower-level mathematics, and assist in creating new courses and curriculum in statistics. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in multiple modalities, including online, hybrid, and in-person, in an urban-serving campus environment.

The successful candidate will also develop and maintain a high-quality, high-impact, community-engaged research program involving our diverse undergraduate student body. This position will be expected to engage in service to the institution and the profession. SIAS offers substantial opportunities to collaborate on innovative community-engaged and interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service.

While not required, positive factors for consideration may include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching;
  • Experience as an independent instructor of statistics or lower-level mathematics courses;
  • Experience mentoring students in an academic setting, especially students from diverse racial, cultural, gender identity/fluidity, and social or economic backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in research, including potential to acquire funding for research;
  • Expertise in teaching and research focused on the social and ethical impact of statistics in the world;
  • Evidence of success using inclusive teaching practices and a variety of pedagogical techniques and technologies.

The base salary range for this position will be $8,222-$8,778 per month ($74,000- $79,000 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a one-time relocation allowance, if applicable. Qualifications

Consistent with UW Faculty Code, and the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences appointment criteria (available at https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/faculty-assembly/appointment-promotion-and-tenure-committee), appointment at the rank of assistant professor requires completion of professional training (doctorate), and teaching and research ability that evidences promise of a successful career. 

  • An earned Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or a closely related field. In exceptional circumstances, candidates in the final stages of their degree (pending conferral) may be selected and appointed on an acting basis;
  • Demonstrated prior competence as a TA or primary instructor in statistics or mathematics courses;
  • Expertise mentoring students and engaging with diverse student populations, or a demonstrated plan for undertaking such work if candidate has not yet had this experience;
  • Scholarship or research in statistics, or a well-developed articulation of future research publications/programs in statistics.

  • A research statement. This should include an assessment of the impact of your research or research agenda, a concise description of planned research areas, and plans for seeking funding. Please include how you will involve UW Tacoma (UWT) undergraduate students in your research program, and how your scholarship has supported (or how you plan to support) the success of first-generation students and/or students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and/or gender backgrounds (two-page maximum).
  • A Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) statement detailing (with examples) your leadership, commitment, and experiences with diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings. This should also describe specific ways you would help advance our commitments to DEI and anti-racism. Applicants who have not yet had the opportunity for such experience should provide a plan detailing how their work will further those commitments (two-page maximum).
  • A statement of your teaching philosophy, including methods you use or intend to use, and high-impact teaching practices you use or intend to use. Please include a list of existing UWT statistics or mathematics courses you feel qualified to teach. Please address how your teaching has supported (or how you plan to support) the success of first-generation students and/or students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and/or gender backgrounds (two-page maximum).
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness. This might include: sample syllabi, quantitative and/or qualitative student evaluations, and/or peer teaching evaluations.
  • Names and contact information for three professional references, with letters available upon request.
