We are seeking a full time Quality Engineer at our AFL Hyperscale division in Kent, WA. The purpose of the Quality Engineer is to establish and maintain a disciplined and data-driven internal quality system execute projects to maximize value by improving the quality of raw materials that are purchased and used in manufacturing. As a part of this effort, the Quality Engineer will be responsible for conducting supplier audits, monitoring the performance of current suppliers, and issuing and monitoring Supplier Corrective and Preventative Action plans and activities to closure, including objective evidence of effectiveness. In addition, the Quality Engineer’s internal efforts will assist Process Engineers and Manufacturing in developing control plans, ensuring process discipline through effective process auditing, and driving problem resolution and improvement through a closed-loop, data-driven approach. This person will be a member of the quality team and will be accountable for leading projects to reduce fiber defects in cable manufacturing, leading fiber quality control test and measurement processes and working with the development and commercial teams to evaluate, qualify and industrialize new fibers for cable manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Global quality team members to implement processes and best practices towards ISO 9000 implementation.
  • Identify non-conformances and opportunities for improvement. Request, approve and follow-up on corrective actions with suppliers.
  • Perform internal audits of critical operational processes.
  • Develop control plans to monitor the quality of incoming materials and internal production processes.
  • Apply six-sigma and DMAIC methodology to create a data-driven improvement cycle throughout the production environment.
  • Investigate and resolve fiber quality issues to include technical disposition of items with defects or anomalies, and the initiation of corrective and preventative actions to improve optical fiber cable manufacturing process capability and performance.
  • Interact with customers on technical and quality related topics or issues. Lead all efforts to resolve customer complaints entered in timely manner
  • Train test personnel and operations associates on various test equipment as needed
  • Design and build optical measurement systems and setups when needed
  • Support business plan objectives to increase productivity, reduce waste, improve quality, and enhance safety
  • Lead, participate, and support cross-functional project teams as assigned to achieve required objectives on time and on-budget.
  • Develop policies & procedures to continuously improve the quality system.
  • Participate in the maintenance of ISO 9001 registration and any other quality system requirements.
  • Adhere to and promote the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or equivalent educational experience
  • 3 or more years’ experience in a manufacturing environment as a process, quality, or project engineer.
  • Demonstrated ability in process-based auditing, root cause analysis, problem solving, and process
  • improvement techniques.
  • ASQ certification (SSBB, CQE, CQM and/or CQA) is preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish successful, closed-loop quality systems from those that create risk due to fundamental system weaknesses.
  • Ability to conduct informative, process-based audits based upon a thorough understanding of quality system requirements.
  • Strong in Microsoft Office and statistical analysis software.
  • Knowledge of ISO-9000 based quality systems.
  • Knowledge of MRP/ERP systems
  • Bilingual English-Spanish preferred.
