Overview of the Organization

Massachusetts General Hospital was established to provide care to Boston's sick, regardless of socioeconomic status—an innovative idea in 1811. In the words of our founder, John Warren, MD, “When in distress, every man becomes our neighbor.” Today, Mass General is a 1,021-bed academic medical center that annually admits 44,000 inpatients, handles 2 million outpatient and emergency visits and performs more than 47,000 surgical operations. Mass General operates the largest hospital-based research program in the United States and is the top recipient of hospital research funding from the National Institutes of Health. With an annual research budget of $1.3 billion, 1,200 clinical trials are taking place at Mass General at any given time, paving the way for new and improved treatments for our patients locally and around the globe. Mass General is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

With Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General is a founding member of Mass General Brigham (MGB), a large, integrated care delivery system that includes community hospitals, primary care and specialty physicians, specialty facilities, community health centers and other health-related entities.

Overview of the Department

Mass General’s philanthropy program has grown among the most successful in academic medicine and health care. The Development Office is a vibrant and collaborative team focused on advancing the hospital’s mission of health care excellence, and committed to expanding the philanthropy that makes this mission possible. Mass General is in the final stretch of the Campaign for Mass General, a seven-year, $3 billion campaign that will successfully conclude on December 31, 2024. In parallel, the hospital has undertaken a capital campaign for a new, state-of-the-art inpatient facility that will extend beyond 2024; construction of the new Phillip and Susan Ragon Building is underway.

Mass General offers a competitive benefits package including generous health care and retirement plans and an array of professional development opportunities. The Development Office Flexible Workplace Program is a hybrid work model that affords employees the opportunity to work in the office a minimum of 4-6 days per month, depending on the business needs of the role. We comply with all Mass General Brigham conditions of employment, including vaccination mandates.

We recognize and value a diversity of perspectives, experiences and backgrounds in both our workforce and donor community. Rooted in the hospital’s Diversity and Inclusion statement and Mass General Brigham’s United Against Racism initiative, we actively work to build and retain a more diverse workforce; foster an inclusive and equitable work environment where everyone belongs; examine unconscious bias; and address systemic barriers to these goals. We believe in treating our constituents and each other with the dignity and respect that every human being deserves.
