Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Medical Division operates 365 days a year on a 24 hour basis with the primary responsibility of overseeing the health and welt-being of all members of the service from pre-employment screening through retirement All medical psychological drug screening, professional services, medical records, medical bills, line of duty prescriptions and disability app 'cations are processed through the Medical Division There are four satellite health care facilities located in the Bronx (Bronx Health Care Unit), Brooklyn (Brooklyn Health Care Unit), Corona (Dr. Robert E. Thomas Health Care Unit) and Staten Island (State Island Health Care Unit) that monitor and evaluate uniformed members of the service while on sick report and/or on limited/restricted duty status.

The Accountant for the Medical Billing Unit with the New York City Police Department's Medical Division, is responsible for auditing medical claims related to Line of Duty injuries for uniformed members of the service prior to payment. In their role, the Accountant will verify that there is a valid Line of Duty Injury Report on file with the Medical Division. They will then ensure that any necessary prior authorization for medical treatment for any billed medical services or medical equipment is on file The Accountant will then ascertain the accuracy of the procedure codes billed to the Department in accordance with New York State Workers' Compensation Fee Schedule Once their audit is complete the Accountant will approve or reject claim for payment processing. The Accountant will also analyze any medical provider disputes and collaborate with Medical Billing Unit adjusters and external representatives to resolve.

  • Must be available to perform overtime as requested and/or needed based on deadlines and/or projects.
  • Only permanent employees in the title and those that filed for and took the recent civil service exam for Accountant, Exam No. 4000 are eligible for this position.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in accounting, including one course each in advanced accounting and auditing; or

2. A valid New York State Certified Public Accountant license.

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as an Accountant - Assignment Level I or at least two years of satisfactory full-time professional accounting or auditing experience.
