Transmission Policy and Strategy Intern

This important role will support and assist with various transmission policy and strategy projects as assigned within the Company’s Transmission Planning, Policy, and Strategy department. These projects will be assigned consistent with the Company’s Internship Program with an emphasis on developing an understanding of the Company’s multiple business units and enhancing the intern’s ability to apply his/her education in a professional environment.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM:

The Summer Internship Program at Black Hills Energy is far from ordinary. You will tackle a real-world project and present it to members of our Executive Team. These projects are designed to enhance your communication and teamwork skills, as you will be collaborating with individuals across all functions within our organization. You will also work alongside professionals in your field, gaining in-depth knowledge about the energy industry and your chosen field of expertise.

At the end of your internship, all of our Summer Interns are invited to our corporate headquarters in Rapid City, South Dakota for an entire week (all expenses paid)! You will tour our different facilities, hear from professionals around the company, and present your final project. This trip helps tie together all you have learned. We hope you finish out our program with an understanding of what it takes to turn the lights on, and to keep them on for our customers across eight states.

LOCATION:  Rapid City, SD

Intern Relocation Adjustment Allowance of $1,000.00 is offered for the purpose of assisting with various expenses associated with your relocation for the internship (less applicable taxes and based on eligibility). Contents of our relocation program are subject to change and may vary based on position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:    
Reports to Manager, Wholesale Transmission Policy with further direction and support from Managers, Analysts, and Engineers within the Planning, Policy, and Strategy team

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Project assignments may include:
  • Tracking relevant policy and regulatory decisions from the FERC and state regulatory commissions.
  • Compiling data related to transmission assets or financials into spreadsheets.
  • Monitoring transmission issues related to the formation or expansion of ISOs/RTOs in the Western Interconnection.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Additional projects may be assigned as needed.
  • Adherence to all safety policies, practices, and procedures to assure a safe working environment.
  • Support safety, diversity, and social responsibility goals of the department, business unit and corporation.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Maintain professional working relationships with internal and external departments, utilities, customers and agencies
  • Promote a collaborative working environment with co-workers

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with reading legal reports, contracts, tariffs, and regulatory commission orders is desirable
  • Prior experience at utility or industrial company desirable.

EDUCATION:

  • College sophomore or above working toward Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Economics, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Work towards a graduate degree desirable. 
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic knowledge of the electric utility industry
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office

SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare and give presentations
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Ability to perform work efficiently, learning to monitor effort in accordance with deadlines
  • Ability to concurrently work on multiple projects independently or as part of a team
  • Motivated self-starter

CERTIFICATIONS/CREDENTIALS:

  • None required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Participation in the Company’s Industry Orientation Experiences, which will include some travel and overnight stays
  • Prepare and present a synopsis of experience with the Company at the end of the internship
