Job Specifications

The Line Operations Intern will support and assist with various non-hot line projects as assigned within the Company’s Line Operations Department.  These projects will be assigned consistent with the Company’s Internship Program with an emphasis on developing an understanding of the Company’s multiple business units and enhancing the intern’s ability to apply his/her education in a business environment.

LOCATION:   Sturgis, SD

CLOSING DATE:   This position will close on February 28, 2019.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:   Area Operations Supervisor


  • Assist and follow instructions of the Lead Line Mechanic and Line Mechanic in constructing, maintaining, and removing lines (overhead and underground).


  • Observe all safety rules and line work procedures.


  • Maintain strong working relationships within Line Operations Department.
  • Maintain supportive and respectful working relationships with all Black Hills Corporation employees and departments.


  • None required.


  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Power Line Construction and Maintenance Program diploma required.


  • Basic knowledge of construction methods, materials, hand tools and their use.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical standards for construction of the electrical system, methods and materials.
  • Basic knowledge of construction equipment for overhead and underground construction.


  • Must have ability to frame poles and have basic knowledge of the tools required for line construction.
  • Must have ability to climb poles.
  • Ability to operate, care for, and maintain tools and equipment.


  • Pole climbing certification required.


  • Prepare and present a synopsis of experience with the Company at the end of the internship.
  • Must possess a valid South Dakota Commercial Driver's license, at least Class A, with air brake endorsement, or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
