The Department Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region Inland Fisheries and Wild Trout unit has an opening for a Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid based out of the Redding office. The incumbent will assist a team of scientists working to heritage and wild trout waters throughout the Northern Region's nine counties. The successful candidate can expect field work locations to include Hat Creek, Pit River, Smith River, McCloud River, Sacramento River, Eagle Lake, and more high value recreational trout fisheries through CDFW's Northern Region. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team in a position that provides development of expertise in fisheries science and management, survey and study design, designing, implementing, and monitoring habitat restoration projects, data analysis, scientific writing, California Endangered Species Act (CESA) and other environmental laws and regulations. The incumbent can expect to assist with boat and backpack electrofishing, snorkel surveys, netting, hook and line, spawning/redd surveys, fish marking and tagging, habitat typing, genetic tissue sampling, evaluating angling regulations, angler creel, and public engagement.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Office and field related activities. Field activities include physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote backcountry/wilderness, high elevations, rugged terrain areas accessible only by hiking and working in inclement weather; multiple day trips (up to 5 days) may require backpack camping and in terrains that support native wildlife, poison oak, biting insects and hazardous organisms. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and during site visits. Possess a valid Driver’s License; ability to operate vehicles including 4-wheel drive vehicles on dirt roads and in rough terrain, outboard boat operation, tow and back-up trailers, and all-terrain vehicle operation. Travel is required.

Special Physical Characteristics: Physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork in remote backcountry settings, with frequent overnight camping for five days at a time is required; carry up to 40 pounds over rough terrain (backpacking); ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes.
