Politics Editor, Newsroom
WNYC and Gothamist Newsroom
The WNYC and Gothamist Newsroom is seeking an ambitious and enterprising politics editor to lead our People & Power team. This editor will oversee multiplatform journalists who cover local political process and the people who influence it – from the borough level up to the state level.
This is a critical desk role as we head into a contentious election year and look toward a mayoral election in 2025. This editor will have an eye for impactful stories within the desk’s beats, which include power structures and democracy, taxes and spending, mayoral power and influence, and Albany policymaking. The team’s work is audience-focused and should always capture the impact on individuals and communities while translating complex issues into compelling and essential text and audio journalism.
The right candidate is a proven newsroom leader who can coach their team through reporting and crafting an engaging story – finding angles that serve our audiences on broadcast and digital. This editor should be comfortable using data to find and shape stories that are informative and engaging.
A competitive candidate will have experience organizing coverage plans and executing larger, preferably cross-newsroom, projects and initiatives.
This editor will guide their team members as they produce a balance of distinctive daily, original enterprise reporting and investigative coverage. This editor will also regularly collaborate with other newsroom desks when beats and breaking news intersect with politics. All editors in the newsroom are responsible for upholding the highest standards of journalistic quality and integrity, ensuring that WNYC’s journalism is engaging, timely, accurate, clear, thorough, fair and impactful.
