The Powertrain System Rig Design and Delivery Team, situated within Powertrain Build and Test Operations (PBTO) under JLR’s Engineering Operations (EO), plays a crucial role in this transformation. Our mission is to seamlessly integrate prototype powertrain systems into our world-class test facilities, supporting Powertrain and Product Engineering in achieving timely, secure, and accessible test data for a high-quality product release.

We're seeking a dynamic System Rig Design and Delivery Manager to lead and shape this evolution. You will take ownership of the System Rig Design and Delivery service, injecting pace and discipline into our test delivery pipeline.

As the Technical Manager of the Powertrain System Rig Design and Delivery Team, you will lead a team of specialized engineers responsible for integrating complex prototype systems into the physical test environment. Your focus will span from defining requirements to successfully completing off-rig and on-rig commissioning. Collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams, program management, and engineering operations management will be key to achieving your goals.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Lead and direct a diverse multi-disciplinary team, delegating responsibilities for optimal performance.
  • Coordinate activities for the efficient and punctual delivery of System Rig Design and Delivery services.
  • Develop plans to broaden the scope of the team's remit and capability to support all PT facility types.
  • Cultivate a team culture focused on technical excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • Utilize Skills Matrices and training programs to enhance team skills and knowledge.
  • Nurture professional growth in team members, especially those in Early Careers.
  • Proactively recognize, celebrate, and publicize individual and team achievements.

Technical Expertise and Mentoring:

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to ensure alignment with technical requirements and standards.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges.
  • Provide expert guidance and technical leadership on Powertrain System Rig Design and Integration core competencies, including electrical distribution systems (LV & HV), cooling and lubrication, HIL model and comms signal integration.
  • Utilize technical expertise to guide the team in addressing complex system design and integration challenges.
  • Foster a growth mindset, encouraging continuous learning and development within the team.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation within the team.

Quality Management and Process Improvement:

  • Implement best practices and standard operating procedures to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
  • Ensure that all key processes are accurately documented and published (JLR Way).
  • Ensure that all System Rig Design and Delivery activities adhere to published processes and standards.
  • Identify and act on opportunities for process improvements and efficiency gains.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement and excellence across all aspects of the team's work.

4. Project Management and Delivery:

  • Act as the product owner for all PT System Rig Designs.
  • Oversee the development of project delivery plans in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure that System Rig Designs are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
  • Ensure all parts and assemblies are ordered, fabricated, and delivered in time to support project schedules.
  • Monitor project progress and address any issues or obstacles that may arise.
  • Adapt to Agile collaborative operating principles while maintaining a clear and objective.

5. Stakeholder Management and Collaboration:

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Ensure all System Rig Design and Delivery commitments made to stakeholders are achievable.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for EO & EP Senior Management for technical queries and escalations.
  • Ensure clear, concise communication and status reporting to all System Rig Design and Delivery stakeholders.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Flexibly tackle any other job-related tasks as directed by the line manager.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Essential:

  • Proven technical expertise and experience of automotive test facility/laboratory operations.
  • Proven knowledge and experience with a wide range of instrumentation and test equipment.
  • Strong technical understanding of Powertrain Systems and associated interfaces.
  • Strong technical understanding of Automotive Communication Protocols.
  • Strong leadership skills, including team development in complex technical environments.
  • Significant experience of the planning and coordination of team activities to achieve objectives.
  • Proven ability to accurate evaluate and report on project progress and risk management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for complex technical challenges.
  • Collaborative mindset to foster teamwork across departments and manage change effectively.
  • Effective communication of technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with championing process standardisation and adherence to quality standards.
  • Experience with structured problem-solving techniques (8D, Six Sigma, CCAR etc).
  • Evidence of creating and sustaining a positive and effective team working environment.
  • Proficiency in English at a minimum of B2 level according to the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR), allowing effective communication in technical and collaborative environments.
  • Educated to Degree level (Level 6) in a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Flexibility to undertake directed tasks in alignment with job requirements.
