Associate Director of Black Church Studies, Duke Divinity School

Occupational Summary

The Associate Director of Black Church Studies, Duke Divinity School, will report directly to the Faculty Director of the Office of Black Church Studies (OBCS). This position is multi-project oriented and requires exceptional interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills. The associate director will provide direction in program management, pastoral ministry, and mentoring. The position will supervise the OBCS program coordinator as well as all interns and student volunteers.

Work Performed

Program Management

  • Coordinate and implement programs and activities to support the Office of Black Church
  • Studies’ contribution to the mission of Duke Divinity School, generally, and to the success of students connected with the Office, particularly.
  • Develop and manage a budget and operating plan for programs and activities.
  • Ensure program goals are met, evaluated and refined for program and activity effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with development, communication, marketing and event teams to strengthen
  • the scale and scope of programming.
  • Manage staff and volunteers with diverse gifts and responsibilities.
  • Meet with stakeholders to promote programs, ensure effective communication and facilitate ease of participation.
  • Produce accurate and timely reporting of program status.
  • Liaise with the Center for Reconciliation, Houses of Study, and other Divinity departments on collaborative projects.

Pastoral Ministry

  • Provide pastoral care and student support for students affiliated with the OBCS.
  • Promote and facilitate Black student engagement with University programs and entities to enrich academic experiences ministry formation.
  • Assist the Director in representing the OBCS with University entities, Durham area, North Carolina, and national church networks.
  • Monitor the recruitment, retention and graduation rates of Black students

Professional Mentoring

  • Steward relationships with School departments and University entities to advance the work of the OBCS, create connections for collaboration and enrich experience of Black students.
  • Facilitate connecting students with mentors and opportunities for ministry to broaden exposure and increase impact.
  • Providing professional mentoring and connecting students with high caliber mentors and Alumni.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication, coordination and administrative skills normally acquired through a Master’s degree.

Experience

3 years of administrative experience OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
