System Power Architect


This role involves Architectural design and optimization of power silicon control systems. The optimization includes small signal and large signal analysis, modeling and prototyping of advanced power conversion topologies such as buck, boost and buck-boost. Major performance characteristics include efficiency, load step response, mode and state transitions, phase shedding/adding, open and closed loop frequency response and EMI mitigation. The control loops may be analog, digital, or mixed signal. Applications for these power circuits include PMIC multi-phase bucks, boosts and buck-boosts, battery chargers (linear, switching, wireless), battery management circuits and WLED backlight controllers. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop world-class power solutions for a diverse set of Apple platforms.

Key Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of DC/DC design/architecture and evaluating tradeoffs for different design applications
  • An in-depth understanding of the role of regulators in portable devices
  • Fundamentals of Power Integrity and AC/DC losses at the system level
  • Practical knowledge of the operation of passives (magnetics and capacitors)
  • IC-Design background including the design of amplifiers, bias networks, voltage and current references, DACs, ADCs and other fundamental analog building blocks
  • Digital design background including Verilog, state-machine design, timing and critical-path timing-closure (Static Timing Analysis)
  • Semiconductor device physics and layout: transistor operation, layout-based effects, parasitic devices, DRC and LVS, on-die partitioning for noise and substrate coupling
  • Capabilities in both top-down and bottom-up planning using high level languages and tools with solid fundamental knowledge
  • Control theory, both continuous time and sampled
  • Strong fundamentals of PCB and C4-package design
  • An effective communicator, both written and oral

Core Responsibilities: •Evaluate & specify optimum design for DC/DC conversion (linear & switched) •System-level architecture (Power-State with Dynamic Voltage a Frequency Management along with multi-supply power sequencing) for power conversion in the mobile design space •Forward-looking solutions for power conversion that optimize efficiency, regulation and total solution area/volume (inclusive of the regulator electronics, inductors and capacitors) •Working with internal teams to specify passives (magnetics and capacitors)
