Senior Software Development Engineer

The Expedia Group - Intelligent Services is a set of services for adding conversational capabilities to any application over voice, text (chat), email, and social channels. It offers Virtual Agents capable of intelligent, natural language, multi-participant conversations with travelers, suppliers, owners, or agents with an extensible set of Virtual Agent Skills available to address participant's needs. 

The team we are hiring for is Universal Messaging Platform(UMP) which is an integral part of the Intelligent Services Organization. This team is responsible for developing highly scalable solutions that can send communication out of Expedia Group to both travelers and suppliers. Sending relevant communications, at the right time targeting the right audience in the right channels is the goal of this platform.

Our team is seeking a high-performing and influential individual contributor who leads by example while continuing to mentor junior engineers, interfaces consistently with tech leadership in the local organization, leads complex and vaguely defined projects, and stretches into team leadership skills based on current projects.

What you'll do:

  • Partners with the business to have a clear understanding of how own technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line
  • Design scalable systems that can process high volume of requests
  • Test and maintain software applications and related programs and procedures by using a variety of software development tools following design requirements of customer
  • Mentor juniors and peers to deliver quality software and guide then in best software practices
  • Facilitate collaboration with different stakeholders with varied perspectives to develop effective solutions to issues
  • Take a whole systems approach to analyze issues and implements holistic solutions by ensuring that linkages between structure, people, process and technology are made
  • Own and deliver tested and optimized high-performance code for a distributed messaging environment
  • Participate in resolution of production issues and lead efforts toward augmenting a DevOps culture
  • Technologies we use: Java, AWS, Kafka, GraphQL, Node.js, Kotlin, React, Elasticsearch, DynamoDB, Redis, Kubernetes S3, Lambda, Docker, DataDog, Looker, Splunk

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree or Masters in a related Technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience
  • 8-10 years of related experience in software development
  • Has worked in at least in 2 multi-quarter projects and in decentralized teams and projects
  • Has driven design for at least 3 projects and has formally mentored at least 3 individuals
  • Contributed to engineering community through a blog post, open source contribution, tech talks, etc.
  • Demonstrated strengths in multiple technologies or languages
  • Justifies technology choices to technical and non-technical observers
  • Serves as an expert for a given domain
  • Makes well defined technology choices
  • Creates team project systems
  • Guides integrations across teams within business unit
  • Understands highly complex systems and design moderately complex systems
  • Identifies and advocates for project quality via testing, monitoring and alerting at the project level
  • Has a strong understanding of testing and monitoring tools and technologies
  • Establishes operational excellence metrics at the team level
  • Guides others in design of software that is easily testable and observable
  • Has a strong understanding of how team goals fit a business need
  • Identifies business problems at the team level and provide solutions

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $173,000.00 to $242,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $277,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
