Shopify is the world’s fastest growing commerce platform and we have no plans to slow down. We receive more than 87 million unique visitors each month and serve billions of requests per day. We’re on a mission to scale our platform while simultaneously improving performance, reliability, and resiliency. To do this, we need the help of dedicated, methodical, and versatile engineers who care deeply about performance. Operating on this level is hard but incredibly rewarding. IN A SINGLE DAY YOU COULD: Dive deep into the systems we are currently using to evaluate and determine how future systems will fit in; Build and grow our Docker-based internal cloud (PaaS); Build on technologies and practices such as mcrouter, Kafka, twemproxy, and Vitess; Profile and debug at scale; Evaluate and deploy next generation distributed data stores such as Cassandra and etcd; Help us build out our second and third data centers and deliver world-class geographic resiliency. TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, THE MAJORITY OF THESE STATEMENTS SHOULD RESONATE WITH YOU: You are a systems-level thinker who can work anywhere in the stack, from right beside the OS and upwards; You’d consider yourself a low-level generalist who is comfortable with multiple languages such as C, Ruby, and Go; You have experience in planning, deployment, and maintenance of large Linux installations; You have experience with a variety of open source software including nginx, redis, and memcached. You have experience building large distributed systems at scale; You enjoy research and figuring out how entire pieces of the stack work; You aren’t afraid to work in a high-stakes environment where things break; You are extremely methodical and disciplined, yet thrive in dynamic environments; IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU HAD: Networking experience with Arista or Juniper gear; Experience with MySQL administration and performance tuning; Proficient in the prevention, detection, and mitigation of DDoS attacks; Experience with performance tuning of Ruby on Rails applications; Experience with Amazon Web Services and Heroku; Experience with Redis or other NoSQL data stores; Experience with Splunk or other log aggregation tools.
