About the right person: The Freelance Investment Writer plays an essential role in Betterment’s marketing and investor education efforts by writing technically astute and reader-friendly articles, while drawing both on original analysis and reported research. The work is fundamental for engaging prospective customers, both retail investors as well as advisors. In addition to possessing a deep well of investing knowledge, the Investment Writer should also have an understanding of the competitive market for automated investing services, current technology, and behavioral finance. Must have the ability to write with a lively voice that aligns with the Betterment brand. Bylined and non-bylined articles to be posted on Betterment.com as well as in outside publications through syndication. The Investment Writer will be responsible for conveying information in a variety of formats, including bylined articles and blog posts, Betterment-brand white papers, and ghostwriting for the company’s Director of Investing and CEO. Subjects include core retirement planning, investment taxes, investment management and strategy, trust and estate planning, IRAs, personal finance planning, as well as advisor-related issues. This position will work in conjunction with Betterment’s content team in the marketing group, working closely with both the Content Manager and Director of Investing on story development. Requirements: Foremost an investment writer and reporter, with extensive published clips or blogs. Advanced degree in journalism or equivalent writing experience. Must have deep financial planning and investing background. Knowledge of Betterment’s investing philosophy as well as current marketplace issues with automated investing services, ETFs, and portfolio design. Must be able to write in a fluid, consumer-friendly style while conveying evidence-based investment research and analysis. Must understand core retail investor issues such as: retirement planning, investment taxes, asset allocation and diversification, and total-return strategy. Experience with compliance approval process. This position is a contract freelance position. Estimated 25 hours per week.
