Be a part of the transformation of a 165-year-old institution with a “mission worth fighting for.”
Join the New York Times as an Engineering Manager on the Subscription Platforms team.
What It’s All About
The New York Times is respected for its ambitious, high-quality journalism, which has earned it an unmatched number of Pulitzer Prizes, and for its reach and influence. We are transforming the nation’s “newspaper of record” into a media-tech powerhouse. We have a strong Technology department of nearly 500 people, who are well-regarded in the community; they speak at conferences and write about their work. More at: https://open.nytimes.com/
The software engineering team that you’ll manage develops and operates the core backend services for home delivery of the New York Times newspaper. That includes functionality for billing and payments, customer account maintenance, product maintenance and pricing, street maintenance and delivery routing, delivery complaint handling and credits, accounting, financial reporting, and more. We’re the technology backbone for a line of business that generates half a billion dollars in annual revenue. This team is part of the Subscription Platforms group responsible for digital subscriptions in addition to home delivery.
How We Work
We employ an Agile/Scrum methodology to deliver reliable software in a predictable way. We push code to production on a regular cadence, and optimize for speed of delivery without compromising on quality. Engineering Managers, while not always directly responsible for delivery, are most definitely responsible for creating a culture and processes that keep developers happy and in the flow as they work on building value. We support Engineering Managers in this role by providing:
Management and professional development training offered in-house
Reimbursement for self-directed management training off-site
Clearly defined career ladders
Managers who really care about your career development and strongly support it
Monthly all-managers meetings and roundtables to share knowledge and learn from peers
Within the Subscription Platforms group, you’d be joining a team of Engineering Managers who manage direct reports spread across several teams. We work together as a team to solve management problems and build high-performing software engineering teams. We regularly discuss management challenges, share lessons learned, and actively support each other so that we can become better managers together.
As a back-end system upon which many enterprise and subscriber-facing apps depend, downtime matters. We collaborate with stakeholders in Marketing, Customer Care, Home Delivery Fulfilment, Finance, and other business areas. We also interact with a multitude of 3rd party technology and service vendors daily. We have a casual dress code and a friendly culture.
What You’ll Do
Recruit, hire, and retain software engineers
Coach and mentor direct reports (i.e. 5-8 software engineers, FTEs and consultants)
Give constructive feedback to help your direct reports grow and develop in their professional careers
Facilitate work and remove obstacles
Create and optimize software delivery and operational processes
Work closely with product owners, project managers and other stakeholders to ensure team’s deliveries
Collaborate with other managers throughout Subscription Platforms on cross-team initiatives, e.g. help define organizational structure and culture
Advocate for your team(s) within the larger NYT Business and Technology organizations
Become a Subject Matter Expert in the Home Delivery business domain (i.e. billing and payments + customer experience + logistics)
Get into the code and do technical work on occasion
