Lead Communications Strategist

Our Global Communications team is seeking an experienced communications professional to be a lead communications strategist of internal communications at MetLife Investment Management, based in Whippany, New Jersey.  This person should have a demonstrable track record of success in internal communications within the financial services sector, experience counseling senior executives and employee engagement communications for a large publicly traded company.


MetLife Investment Management, MetLife, Inc.’s institutional asset management platform, manages investments for MetLife’s general and separate accounts, and provides institutional investors including corporate and government pension plans, insurance companies and other financial institutions with long-term public and private investment and financing solutions. MetLife Investment Management has operations in the Americas, Asia and the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) regions with approximately 900 employees worldwide.


Working under the direction of the AVP of communications, the director will serve as a business partner providing internal communications counsel and strategy to the Chief Investment Officer, members of his leadership team and organizational committees, and will support a wide range of employee communications needs for the organization. 


The successful candidate should have expertise in employee engagement best practices and be able to show leadership of past programs. As a member of the Global Communications team, this individual will develop internal communications programs that target a wide range of stakeholder groups, including senior business leaders and employees and other influencers across MetLife. 


Additionally, this role calls for the ability to lead teams on cross-functional projects, and interact with individuals outside MetLife Investment Management to provide communication partnership and support on enterprise-wide communication strategies and projects.


The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to support the AVP of communications on a wide range of external communications initiatives. Strong attention to detail and exceptional writing and editing skills are required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Chief Investment Officer and his leadership team with strategic, effective internal communications that will help them achieve their business objectives and drive employee engagement.
  • Provide counsel to senior leaders on communications strategies and secure buy-in on approaches.
  • Simplify complex ideas, strategies, financial metrics and industry data into clear and concise messages that resonate with an internal audience.
  • Effectively manage and deliver communications through a variety of channels using current and emerging communications technology.
  • Help lead external communications priorities, including the development and approval of company and third-party news releases, proactive tier-one and trade media pitches, reactive interview requests and external speaking opportunities, among others. 


Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:


  • At least 10 years of experience in financial internal communications, with a focus on senior executive communications and employee engagement.
  • Experience setting an internal communications strategy and executing against the plan, while providing senior executives with sound advice and guidance across all communications activities. 
  • A strong track record of success executing integrated internal communications across multiple channels, and using metrics and feedback to guide future communications. 
  • Able to balance competing priorities to produce high-quality, accurate work under tight deadlines.
  • Experience in working with financial organizations, with knowledge of finance and/or asset management and/or the investments’ function at insurance companies beneficial.
  • Recognized as a team player who willingly shares knowledge and information with others, and able to work effectively in a matrix environment that requires strong partnership across different business areas and functions.
  • High proficiency in written and verbal communication, with strong knowledge of AP house style.



  • Media relations experience, while not necessary, will be viewed favorably. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, or related field; and/or a degree in finance/economics; graduate degree a plus.
