POSITION SUMMARY

Under direction, functions as lead system integrator, managing projects of considerable complexity involving the selection and application of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria for the design, construction, and maintenance of Authority systems. Provides engineering support at the CTA's Control Center and supporting field locations for technology systems including but not limited to: vital signals, traction power, fire life safety equipment, SCADA, IP-based systems, and supporting infrastructure. 

Qualifications

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as lead engineer or liaison overseeing, coordinating, and reviewing work performed by outside consultants, contractors, and in-house designers to ensure compliance with CTA technical standards and operational protocols.
  • Serves as technical expert and engineering support on construction projects that involve Traction Power, Signaling, Train Control Equipment, Substations, Signal buildings, voice and data communications, fiber optics, security alarms, fire detection and suppression, and systems integration and startup activities.
  • Provides technical direction and assuring accuracy of the work produced by the design team and contractors, including plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Interfaces with the other disciplines to ensure proper coordination of the systems aspects of the project.
  • Monitors the design, implementation, and construction of contractor and in-house job progress and resolves problems during the planning, construction, cutover, start-up, and close-out phases.
  • Provides status reports to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and according to Authority standards and needs.
  • Liaises with various internal and external departments in preparing detailed drawings, scope, cost estimates, and specifications in the planning and design of communications projects.
  • Coordinates and integrates criteria from other departments including Infrastructure Engineering, Infrastructure Maintenance, Communications Maintenance, and the Control Center. 
  • Prepares detailed specifications and cost estimates for the design of integrated systems. Researches systems equipment product data to support design needs.
  • Develops Integration Testing and Acceptance Plans including testing forms, procedures, and approval steps.
  • Develops Systems Integration and Interface Management Plans.
  • Interfaces with the Project Manager to determine schedules and monitor design progress.
  • Assists with the development of design directives, design criteria, communication master plans to keep Systems Integration standards up to date. Develops testing and acceptance procedures for Complex construction projects.
  • Identifies, researches, evaluates, recommends, and develops new technology. Evaluates emerging integration technologies and make recommendations on their viability.
  • Develops and maintains Systems Interface Matrices / Databases. Develops and coordinates Interface Control Documents. Helps determine budget estimates and staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule.
  • Establishes and maintains a systematic, documented, comprehensive, and verifiable systems integration processes to be applied through the project’s design and construction phases.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

CHALLENGES

  • Maintaining Systems Integration related standards, proficiency, and guiding Integration related standards to the rest of the department.
  • Designing safety critical infrastructure systems at rail stations, signal facilities, substations, and other CTA facilities to operate in harsh environments such as around 600VDC electrified rail, extreme vibration, floating grounds, electrolysis, etc.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in scientific knowledge and engineering technology and utilizing changes in solving theoretical or practical systems integration problems.
  • Acting as professional role model for younger engineers, providing training, guidance, and support.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, plus eight (8) years of related experience in the design and/or maintenance of Signaling and/or SCADA systems, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Systems Integration Engineering, or similar is preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time and constantly operating a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Physical ability to traverse and to ascend/descend along rail system tracks or electrified rail in dimly lit subways, elevated structures, and expressway median to ensure personal safety.
  • Service Area Requirement: Exempt (Non-Union) employees must live within the boundaries of the CTA Statutory Service Area either at the time of employment or within 6 months of beginning employment at CTA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Detailed knowledge of electrical and communication engineering principles, protocols, methods, and techniques.
  • Detailed knowledge of materials, techniques, and municipal codes and ordinances as applied to design, construction, and maintenance of transit projects.
  • Intermediate skill of the use and application of CAD and GIS applications (i.e. AutoCAD, Microstation, ArcView).
  • Intermediate skill with basic office computer applications (i.e. MS Word, MS Excel, MS Visio, MS Outlook, etc.).
  • Strong research, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to assess how one change can affect the entire project.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Good math skills including Algebra, Calculus, and geometry.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good surveying skills.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to apply engineering knowledge to complex engineering problems with versatility, judgment, and perception.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate routine engineering problems and provide practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Ability to adapt well to change.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to manage moderately complex engineering projects of significant magnitude. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office environment.
  • May be required to work various extended or irregular hours in order to meet project deadlines or respond to CTA emergencies.
  • Works along elevated, ballasted, and subway tracks adjacent to moving rail vehicles, and energized power rails, as well as CTA bus garages and other CTA facilities.
  • Subject to prevailing weather conditions when conducting field inspections. 
  • Occasionally required to travel to other transit properties and contractor facilities located throughout North America.

  • Standard office equipment.
  • Computer, engineering software, calculator, technical manuals and survey equipment.

Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate and may be higher or lower than target.
