Supply Chain Manager, Returnable Packaging Programs

Tesla

What To Expect

Tesla's Service Packaging Engineering team manages packaging solutions that support Tesla's global service and parts distribution network. Returnable packaging is a critical and growing pillar of our sustainability and cost optimization strategy and a brand-new function within the team.

As a Supply Chain Manager, Returnable Packaging Programs, you will be the founding owner of this program, managing the full lifecycle of returnable container fleets, from business case development and initial deployment through fleet management, cycle counting, ad hoc return loops, and rebuys.

This is a high-impact role blending operational execution with strategic vision, working cross-functionally with Service Operations, Supply Chain, Logistics, Finance, and Packaging Engineering. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in ambiguity, builds structure from the ground up, and is equally comfortable in a spreadsheet, warehouse, or leadership review.

What You'll Do

Own end-to-end management of returnable packaging fleets supporting Tesla's service parts distribution network, including totes, racks, dunnage, and custom containers

Develop and maintain fleet sizing models tracking inventory levels, utilization rates, and return loop performance; execute cycle counting programs to maintain fleet accuracy across the network

Identify and drive rebuys based on fleet attrition, damage rates, and program growth, including sourcing coordination and purchase justification

Design and manage network strategy and reverse logistics flows to recover containers from service centers, distribution hubs, and end-of-life locations

Develop business cases and ROI models for returnable packaging investments, including TCO analysis and payback periods — presenting to Finance and leadership for CapEx approval

Identify supply chain failure modes, drive resolution with internal teams and suppliers, and deploy process improvements to eliminate reliance on expendable packaging

Partner with Service Packaging Engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to support packaging design projects, manage supplier timelines, and drive program growth across new service platforms and geographies

What You'll Bring

Degree in Supply Chain, Operations Management, Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability

3-5 years in supply chain (planning/procurement), packaging operations, logistics, or process-critical operations in a fast-paced environment

Experience managing returnable, reusable, or closed-loop packaging fleets – including fleet tracking, cycle counting, repair, and rebuy planning

Familiarity with service parts logistics, packaging engineering, warehousing operations, or aftermarket/automotive supply chains

Analytics-savvy with strong, working knowledge of ERP, WMS, TMS, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI; able to translate data into clear operational recommendations and deliverables

Lateral thinker with strong judgment, builds structure in ambiguous environments, manages competing priorities, interacts with stakeholders professionally, and operates comfortably at both a detailed and strategic level

PMP certification or equivalent project management training preferred
