The Opportunity

The Technical Trainer supports and delivers technical training programs at the local manufacturing site. Reporting directly to the General Manager/Plant Manager with a dotted-line relationship to Operations Learning & Development, this role ensures employees successfully complete operator and craft certification requirements. The Technical Trainer serves as a key resource for team members by evaluating machine skills, providing coaching and feedback, administering certification assessments, supporting progression-based training, and promoting a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock

  • Deliver hands-on technical training and coaching to support employee certification and skill development.
  • Partner with Operations Learning & Development to support new hire orientation and onboarding programs.
  • Track, evaluate, and measure training effectiveness using established training standards and learning systems.
  • Develop and maintain technical learning materials, including standard operating procedures, guided workflows, and job aids.
  • Build strong working relationships with trainees, supervisors, and site leadership to support workforce capability development.
  • Participate in the hiring and selection process by assessing candidate skills and providing recommendations regarding industrial experience and job readiness.
  • Conduct training across all shifts to ensure consistent learning opportunities and certification standards.
  • Promote a safety-first culture and reinforce safe work practices throughout training activities.
  • Support day-to-day certification processes following Train-the-Trainer requirements and established learning standards.
  • Identify and implement improvements that increase training efficiency, reduce certification timelines, and strengthen operational performance.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

What you need to succeed

  • 1–3 years of experience delivering training, on-the-job instruction, coaching, or related learning activities in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • 2–4 years of manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems (LMS) preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Forms preferred.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and partner effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Results-oriented with a focus on growth, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to support implementation of new processes and learning technologies.
  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to analyze information and build consensus when needed.
  • Commitment to quality, waste reduction, and operational excellence.
  • Willingness to work on the production floor and support all shifts as needed.
