UKCEH is looking for an Environmental Scientist (Laboratory & Field Support) to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.

As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:

  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years
  • 10% employer pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • And much more.

You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Environmental Scientist with a strong analytical background to be based at our Edinburgh site. The role is focused on learning different techniques concerning samples for our environmental research and includes field sampling and laboratory analysis of air, soil, and vegetation samples. In addition, you will be responsible for the day-to-day tasks of running laboratories that are typical of an active research environment, and the development of new, improved methods for analyses as well as preparation and analysis of environmental data.

You will be working within our Biosphere-Atmosphere Exchange & Effects group in the Atmospheric Chemistry & Effects Science Area at our Edinburgh site who are involved in projects in the UK and abroad. We work on the exchange of trace gases, especially greenhouse gases (GHGs) in a wide range of habitats (such as forest, grassland, wetlands, urban areas, and cropland) including bioenergy crops in the UK and in Mediterranean, arctic and tropical climate zones.

Our work focuses on understanding and quantifying the interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere based on measurements, experiments and modelling of greenhouse gases, reactive air pollutants, water, and energy. We quantify fluxes and transport of matter and energy, pollutant impacts on the above- and belowground biota, and how changes in ecological communities’ feedback on atmospheric composition.

Training will be provided in a number of areas to assist the appointee to develop cutting edge and transferable research skills to support career progression. You will receive training in the following areas:

  • Laboratory methods for the measurement of air samples, using gas chromatography and spectroscopy techniques
  • Field sampling techniques and laboratory methods for the chemical analysis of samples of vegetation and soil from different environments
  • Physiological techniques for the measurement of gas exchange from soil and plants
  • Data management, statistical analysis, report writing, and presentation of results to peers

For the role of Environmental Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who:

  • Has a degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biological or Environmental Sciences
  • Ideally has previous experience of quantitative scientific work in a research environment (highly desirable)
  • Has existing knowledge of laboratory practices and techniques, together with experience of gas chromatography or spectroscopy (highly desirable)
  • Is enthusiastic about working within environmental research with equal desire to work within both the laboratory and at field sites
  • Demonstrates an aptitude for solving complex problems and is self-motivated
  • Is willing to participate in field sampling missions abroad (up to 4 weeks), including in developing countries
  • Has a full driving licence (highly desirable for this role)

We welcome applications from international candidates; however, at present, we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.

If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet.
