Summer Session is Stanford University’s fourth academic quarter, offering more than 150 courses from 40 academic departments to 2,000 graduate, undergraduate, and advanced high school students. Along with serving the needs of Stanford matriculated students, Summer Session makes it possible for visiting students to take advantage of the same courses, culture, and resources available at Stanford University. The mission of the Stanford Summer Session office is to offer a transformative educational experience to all students, both in the classroom and through an array of enrichment programs, community-building activities, academic support services, and more.

Summer Session is seeking an Associate Director, Residential Experience & Curriculum Management to join the Summer Session team. Reporting to the Associate Dean & Director of Summer Session, the Associate Director manages key stakeholder relationships across campus, course management with departments, and, as Summer Session’s highest Student Affairs officer, oversees all residential, policy, and crisis management, ensuring that Stanford protocols are followed to the same standard that they are in the other three academic quarters.

  • Please note that the Summer Session office and this role are primarily located at the Stanford Redwood City Campus. During Summer, this role operates out of the historic campus, but for the other quarters, it is based in Redwood City.

This position is eligible for consideration of a flexible hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need

Your responsibilities include:

Residential Management:

  • Manage Summer Session team of 3 full-time, year-round Residential professionals and direct the hiring, training, coaching, and mentoring of more than 100 contingent Summer RAs and 12 House Directors. Ensure that Stanford policies and practices are maintained in the operation of the program. 
  • Responsible for full oversight of Residential operations, including a vast array of in-house student development programming, excursions, and other activities for residential students.
  • Develop the Summer Session Residential operations budget and forecast expenditures for in-residence programming and excursions. Evaluates Residential program effectiveness and initiates changes as necessary.
  • Coordinate the summer Community Standards Review process. Adjudicate cases that involve complex problems that may result in disciplinary action or dismissal from the program, alongside Student Affairs colleagues. Partner with colleagues in the Student Dean’s Office, Residential Education; when necessary, consult the Office of the General Counsel, Department of Public Safety, Registrar’s office, and Vaden to ensure a nuanced approach to community standards and policies. 
  • Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with university and academic policies, in collaboration with the Minor’s Task Force, Student Dean’s Office, and others. Collaborate with UHR to ensure all instructors and residential staff have updated Live Scan/Mandated Reporter information tracked. Oversee the ePom process and ensure it is implemented effectively.
  • Collaborate with partners in R&DE Planning Ops to determine facilities for summer, housing and dining rates each year, as well as discuss and set house dues for Undergraduate residences. 
  • Provide oversight of emergency response in Summer for all undergraduate students living on campus ranging from mental health support interventions, to student conduct response, to crisis management; monitor and respond to acts of intolerance, natural disaster, and other emergencies.

Curriculum Management:

  • Oversee Curriculum Management for Summer Quarter, liaising with 40 academic departments across campus to ensure the University retains a robust academic curriculum. Conduct course solicitation outreach to obtain approximately 150 courses offered for full academic credit. 
  • Provide guidance on budgets and TA ratios and develop and maintain key departmental ties. Determine financial viability of course offerings and communicate course cancellations to academic departments.
  • Serves as integral member of department Leadership Team; responsible for strategy, development, and evaluation of program offerings and proposed new initiatives.
  • Identify, troubleshoot and resolve a wide range of complex questions and issues that confront Summer Session students, department operations, and campus partner relations.
  • Analyze critical problems and lead resolution covering a wide range of subject areas including residential policies and procedures, academic operations, General Education requirements and WASC policies on credits, community standards, student development and conflict resolution, and more, using advanced professional knowledge of higher education best practices and excellent judgment.

To be successful in the position, you will bring: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in higher education setting preferred.
  • Advanced professional knowledge of higher education best practices
  • Advanced communication skills and exceptional EQ– to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

Working Conditions:

  • Routine extended working hours during peak cycles, including some on-call night & weekend crisis management duties when the program is in session.
  • Regular travel across main campus, and between the two campuses during the planning season. 

The expected pay range for this position is $121,000-$150,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
