Essential Duties

Principal Responsibilities: 1. Participates in developing and executing a strategic plan that creates best in class operations, drives increased customer satisfaction and meets financial targets. 2. Oversees and manages the work of the executive chef, management and culinary staff; complies with safe food handling, equipment safety guidelines and sanitation standards. 3. Assures that all standard operating procedures for revenue and cost control are in place and consistently utilized. 4. Creates and maintains standards of excellence; supports the training and certification processes needed to maintain standards of performance and/or ready the organization for advanced levels of service. 5. Oversees and manages the food/inventory system for recipe development, creating cycle menus, forecasting production quantities, inventory levels, purchasing and cost. 6. Develops an operating budget for each of the department’s revenue outlets; monitors and takes corrective action as necessary to ensure that budget goals are attained. 7. Researches new products and develops an analysis of the cost/profit benefits. 8. Assures that effective orientation and training for new staff and professional development activities for experienced staff are planned and implemented. 9. Inspects to ensure that all safety, sanitation, energy management, preventive maintenance and other standards are consistently met. 10. Helps plan and approves external and internal marketing and sales promotion activities for the food and beverage department. 11. Works collaboratively with union representatives and Human Resources to address employee matters. 12. Approves the menus proposed by the Executive Chef for all outlets and special events. 13. Ensures that all legal requirements are consistently adhered to including federal, state and/or local laws pertaining to alcoholic beverages and food safety and sanitation. 14. Helps develop wine lists and develops controls and procedures to serve alcoholic beverages for specific functions. 15. Assists in planning and implementing procedures for special events and banquet functions. 16. Responsible for material management and building logistics. 17. May perform others duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and eight years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Position Focus:

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Hospitality, the Director of Strategic Initiatives, is responsible for visioning, developing, implementing, and overseeing critical business processes, strategic projects, and initiatives.

  • As a key member of the Hospitality Senior leadership team; this position directs the following functional or administrative units/areas within Hospitality along with related managerial and leadership responsibility of the respective teams:
  • Organizational & Workplace Excellence includes talent recruitment and retention, leave administration, leadership and professional development, performance review administration, and human capital management. Drives for meaningful and sustained change in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) by providing solutions and developing innovative and effective DEIB programs. Provides managerial oversight of the Director of Organizational and Workplace Excellence and indirectly manages the Director’s team of professional staff.
  • Business Optimization and Technology, including but not limited to the vision for establishing and executing Hospitality’s business optimization and technology strategy, which includes more than twenty (20) operation-critical technologies. Responsibilities include assessing existing technologies, identifying new technology triggers, and identifying and assessing potential new technologies for possible adoption. Executes Hospitality’s business optimization and technology strategy within overarching university interests and goals; collaborates proactively and effectively with critical institutional stakeholders, primarily Yale Information Technology.
  • Procurement and Sustainability. Provides strategic leadership to Hospitality’s sourcing and supply chain management functions. Responsible for creating strategic relationships with key suppliers to satisfy both short and long-term needs of Yale Hospitality. Conducts multifaceted assessments of options involving the balancing of multiple priorities and interests. Oversees and assesses procurement negotiation process and authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts ranging from routine to complex. Identifies and drives process improvements and implements best-in-class procurement processes, relevant analytics, and key controls for the Hospitality organization. Ensures compliance with university procurement policies. Works effectively and in close partnership with key stakeholders within Hospitality and the University and external vendors.
  • Achieves Hospitality’s mission and goals by working in close partnership with the Associate Vice-President, staff, external vendors, and internal stakeholders to develop and implement the organization’s strategy.
  • Understands and monitors external and internal factors influencing Hospitality’s mission and goals and conducts strategic gap analysis.
  • Conceptualizes, prioritizes, and plans new programs and program changes as they relate to key functional areas
  • Through the application of innovative thinking and by employing process improvement methodologies, identifies opportunities to achieve continuous improvement and operational efficiencies and develops strategies for implementation.
  • Works with key stakeholders and functional partners to build a continuous improvement environment to support performance improvement priorities and promote a proactive culture of improvement.
  • Provides leadership in ensuring efficient and effective execution of short and long-term project plans
  • Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department in alignment with university goals and objectives
  • Cultivates a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in the organization
  • Directs teams in special projects across-unit initiatives
  • Resolves conflict and leads cross-functional initiatives and associated teams.

Required Licenses or Certifications

Required License(s) or Certification(s): Must hold a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements

Physical Requirements: Sustained standing; frequent bending. Move, lift and carry supplies, equipment, and materials weighing up to 25 pounds without assistance from floor to waist height and 20 pounds to shoulder height. Carry supplies up or down stairs if necessary. Work in confined areas with wide temperature variations. Lift items above shoulder height. May be required to travel to and from units and/or events.
