User Experience / User Interface Designer

African Leadership University

We are looking for individuals who will support our expansion by uncovering meaningful human-centered insights that drive great design and innovation not only for our students’ learning experience but for all our different stakeholders. As part of this new team, you must demonstrate a collaborative working style, great communication and self-directed learning skills as well as service design excellence. If you are interested in information and communication design, or interface/interaction design, there is a place for you at ALU.

Our purpose is to catalyze change in Africa and around the world by building the world’s most innovative university. Our engaging learning experiences integrate technology, personalized learning, real world projects and entrepreneurial leadership to create innovators, game-changers, and problem-solvers. We ask our students to declare a ‘mission’ for their lives instead of declaring an academic major. Our two undergraduate campuses—Mauritius and Rwanda—are well in operation, as is our graduate School of Business. Moving forward, we plan to scale across the continent and then around the world, ultimately developing 3 million entrepreneurs and leaders by 2060. We are growing rapidly: student enrollment increased by 1,200% between 2015 and 2017 and revenue grew by 650% in 2017. In 2017, the New York Times described ALU as one of ‘8 places in the world where history is being made’, and in 2016, Fast Company named ALU the ‘third most innovative company in Africa’ while CNN described ALU as the ‘Harvard of Africa’.

Design, mainly of the learning experience, has been at the heart of the radical innovation that is ALU. It has allowed us to completely rethink higher education - achieving very high quality at 1% or less of what it costs to go to a great university today. As the institution expands across the continent, we have to respond to the needs of an increasing number of stakeholders, while making sense of an increasing amount of information. We are at a point where we now want to take our design capabilities to the next level.

UX/UI Designers at ALU work to facilitate this transition by building responsive technology to communicate with stakeholders and hear from them in a seamless way. The User Experience design team will support the design and integration of the different components of the user experience of all the different key stakeholders of ALU by providing user perspectives, prototypes/mock-ups, design frameworks, processes, and best practices to the various teams. The user experience team will also be in charge of evaluating whether ALU is delivering on its promise by tracking the performance and reception of its various products and initiatives.

UX/UI designers at ALU work with various teams across the organization (facilitators, curriculum designers, product managers, software engineers, graphic designers, etc.) to help design new features. As a UX/UI designer, you will generally contribute to enhancing the design of numerous aspects of our user experiences as well as our technology interfaces and physical spaces. More generally you will be in charge of:

  • Creating tools to guide teams in building holistic services such as experience or journey maps;

This role can be part-time or full-time; based in Mauritius, Kenya or remote.
