The University of Denver is a medium-size (12,000 students) private university located in a thriving metropolis at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on two areas of research and teaching; 1) Cell and Molecular Biology - including biophysics, neuroscience, cell signaling, and developmental biology, and 2) Ecology, Biodiversity - including behavioral ecology, plant-insect interactions, conservation biology, restoration ecology and evolution. The department offers undergraduate majors of study including Biology (B.A./B.S.), Molecular Biology (B.S./B.S.), Ecology and BioDiversity (B.A./B.S.) or Integrated Sciences (B.A.). A concentration in Cognitive Neurosciences (B.A./B.S.) is also offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology. At the graduate level the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. with a research emphasis in either of the two research emphases described above.

Position Summary

We seek a research assistant to work under the direction of Dr. Robin Tinghitella at the University of Denver to facilitate ongoing field and lab-based research in behavioral and evolutionary ecology.

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Anticipated start date: June 1, 2018

Essential Functions

  • The research assistant will contribute primarily to ongoing projects focused on the effects of anthropogenic noise on singing insects.
  • Field work will consist of surveys of diurnal and nocturnal Orthoptera, behavioral observations, and contributing to long-term monitoring of anthropogenic noise.
  • The research assistant will receive a minimum of the equivalent of three days off per week, although given the nature of field research, time off will be scheduled to ensure that on site field research is conducted in accordance with essential project tasks.
  • Example tasks and duties: Daily care and rearing of Orthopterans, including recording data Maintenance and upkeep of cricket rearing facility Survey (i.e., collection) of singing insects at local (Jefferson County, CO) field sites Data collection and management Anthropogenic noise recording analysis
  • Supervisory Experience: Oversee volunteer undergraduate research assistant(s).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of Orthopterans
  • Dedication to careful data collection and management
  • Field and laboratory research in behavioral ecology or similar
  • Enthusiasm and strong work ethic
  • Ability to spend long hours in the field, including at night

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 month commitment (between June and September 2018)
  • Flexibility in scheduling required

  • Master's degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • 2+ years of lab and field-based evolution/behavior/ecology research
  • Experience working with and identifying Orthopterans in the field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of >1 year of anthropogenic noise and behavioral ecology research

Work Schedule

  • Varied, Part time, approximately 20 hours per week
