Formed in May 2007, the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and is located on the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Campus.

The Institute is led by Jacques Ravel, Ph.D., and a team of faculty investigators. Members of the IGS team have helped to revolutionize genomic discoveries in medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and biodefense. By applying genomic tools to clinical research, these investigators are creating new dynamics for understanding individual differences in our susceptibility to disease, for understanding the role of our body’s microorganisms in health and disease, and for exploring new personalized therapeutics. 

The Institute is currently recruiting for a part-time (.50% FTE) Graphic Designer position.

Primary Duties:

  • Design, develop, and produce graphic material to facilitate departmental promotional and educational projects. Interact with internal clients on a regular basis to facilitate the timely delivery of quality graphical material, including newsletters, marketing and sales collateral, and front-end website design and updates.
  • Meet with customers to determine needs and timeframe, develop design concepts, and review work from design inception through the delivery of finished products.
  • Formulate manual and computer designs, layouts, and formatting for the publication of instructional, promotional, web-based, or other graphical materials.
  • Reviews and recommends new software and hardware requirements and learns new approaches and technological solutions to improve current performance and stronger analytics.
  • Examine project requirements and identify/interface with the proper technological support and outside vendors needed to produce results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, Visual Arts, or related field.

Experience: Three (3) years' experience in graphic design or visual design. 

Other: Related experience may be substituted for education.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to design, develop, and maintain websites using content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal a plus. Specifically, we are looking for individuals with the following skills:
  • Assist in the development of new websites in an incremental manner (sketches, mockups, and treatments to working markup)
  • Ability to create and use HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
  • Experience in using Adobe Suite of tools including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator
  • Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Ability to demonstrate, understand, apply, and adhere to the UMB Core Values of Respect and Integrity, Well-being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.

Hiring Range Pro-Rated (@ .50% FTE): $32,000 - $35,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
