Senior Director, Demand Generation

This role is responsible for driving all demand generation activities for Avalara’s new business opportunities across customer segments. 

This innovative marketer will lead and manage a team responsible for the design, creation and execution of high volume inbound and targeted outbound campaigns including direct marketing, field marketing webinars/webcasts, email and nurturing campaigns, while working in conjunction with our channel marketing organization.  

This critical role requires a world-class leader deeply steeped in modern B2B SaaS marketing practices.  The VP of Demand Generation will be responsible for managing and driving efficiency and maximizing the lead generation process throughout the funnel stages, to deliver quantifiable and measurable results to continue driving the company’s growth. 
This role presents the right candidate with the opportunity to drive the new business demand generation marketing engine of a high growth company, in a growing industry, and help scale the organization to its next level. 

Job Duties:

  • This role will develop the plan and create the vision and drive demand generation activities for all new business across all customer segments in the US
  • Develop and implement high impact, multi-channel marketing strategy to generate demand and build qualified leads and sales pipelines
  • Oversee the entire closed loop demand generation process, from initial awareness to hand-off to sales, and follow-up using SaaS B2B industry best practices in marketing with a heavy emphasis on measurement and optimization
  • Measure and report on effectiveness of marketing programs and campaigns, with the purpose of improving resource allocation, efficiency and revenue generation
  • Align marketing programs and activities with overall marketing strategy
  • Function as both a leader and doer, providing position leadership and insights, supporting corporate strategic objectives, as well as being a hands-on member of the team
  • Quickly establish strong relationships and rapport with teams particularly Partner and Chanel Marketing.
  • Act as senior most demand generation expert at the company, creating and institutionalizing best-practice processes, while continuously innovating to grow the company to the next level. 


  • Expert demand gen marketer (preferably in non-traditional and innovative space)
  • Demonstrated success teaming up with corporate marketing services particularly around social media and demand generation as it ties in to inbound and outbound direct marketing
  • Core strength in SMB/mid-market with success and understanding in Enterprise and SOHO segments a big plus
  • Strength and experience with customer segmentation and channel marketing
  • Track record in driving high growth in a B2B SaaS environment
  • Depth in marketing by metrics and KPIs
  • Strong understanding of all facets of conversation rates, close rates, leads and opportunities, funnel opportunity and understanding of the full life cycle of a buyer’s journey
  • Excellent grasp of B2B marketing, product marketing, and B2B selling concepts and the sales pipeline
  • Experience with CRM automation tools (e.g. Salesforce) and marketing automation platforms (e.g. Eloqua, Infer, etc.) a must
  • Deep analytical and quantitative skills
  • Creative, high energy, innovative, proactive, and resourceful
  • Demonstrable skills in strategic planning and execution of marketing initiatives
  •  BA/BS. MBA preferred
