Short Description

The nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) provides patient services to patients with cardiovascular disease consistent with practice standards as well as consistent with services customary to the collaborating physician.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs all functions and procedures of a hospital provider under general direction of collaborating physicians. Interprets and evaluates patient data as authorized by the collaborating physician for the purpose of determining management and treatment of patients.

Attends patient care rounds with the cardiovascular Surgery team

Performs patient care to include evaluation and management services diagnostic testing and therapeutic procedures congruent with UTMP policies.

Evaluates and triages individual patients and physician/patient calls. Initiates verbal and written orders. Triages phone calls for physicians. Provides patient teaching and facilitates communication between physician, client, and other hospital personnel.

May assist cardiovascular surgeons in the operating room and cardiac cath lab

Serves as liaison between hospital staff, physicians and patients.

Assists with office follow up visits and consults as needed.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Valid TN current license as an advanced nurse practitioner or physician assistant

Prefer a minimum of two years’ experience as a Cardio Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Board Certification

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Summary

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for planning and directing the delivery of primary health care and health education programs in association with Methodist Healthcare Primary Care Associates (MHPCA). The candidate will provide care and health education for patients and their family. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Proficiency in applying advanced concepts, principles, and professional techniques in a specialized field of nursing.
  • Current DEA number (if required by facility).

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients in the assigned center according to approved protocol and acceptable standards.
  • Performs necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures according to written, approved protocols developed with and under the supervision of the Medical Director/collaborating Physician. Participates in the design and revision of protocols.
  • Collaborates with Medical Physician and ancillary personnel as appropriate to promote quality care for patients. Makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors related to patient care.
  • Understands, applies and supports practice policies, procedures, goals and standards.
  • Develops strong partnership with patients, family members, fellow physicians/nurses and support staff. Focuses on high patient and family satisfaction and retention.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • May require handling or administering of narcotics.
  • Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.
  • Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motion, as well as using hands for gripping and squeezing.
  • Ability to use hands and feet together for repetitive coordinated motions.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.

REQUIRED:

Completion of a master’s degree or higher in a nursing specialty and is demonstrated through national specialty certification as a nurse practitioner.

Atleast Three years of general nursing experience of clinical practice at the RN level or higher.

Registered Nurse with current license to practice professional nursing in the state of employment and Advanced practice licensure / certification as required by state of employment.

Effective June 1, 2018: All new hires and transfers are required to have BLS certification.
